Bakesy of Wardman Park Fotel, otherwise known as Capt. “X," yesterday filed suit for injunction in hte District Supreme Court against' Grant short of Portland, Oreg., and Edgar C. \“Snyder, United States marshal, to pre- svent the enforcement of a judgment ob- tained against him by Short in the Municipal Court for $636. “ The apartment of Bakesy was entered February 16 last by a deputy marshal armed with a writ of attachment from the Municipal Court and the personal _property of the officer taken. He seeks tt:tpné\enl the sale of the seized prop- erty. Through Attorney George C. Shinn, the court is told that the goods taken by the marshal include & tin box and contents, camera and tripod, three films and three service buzzers. « ‘Bakesy claims that he is not indebted to Short und that he compromised the claim with Short’s wife for $300 and \, Grasses Sought to, Turn Deserts of Southwest Into Pasture Land Can the semi-desert regions of the southwest be changed into rolling pas- tures, spotted with grasing herds? Department of Agriculture experts here admit that much may be accom- plished in this direction by introduction of new grasses from arid sections of the world. H. L. Westover, department ex- plorer, left Washington last week for @ year in the interior of South Amer- ica, where he will conduct & systematic search for grasses that promise to do well in dry reglons. Westover will spend much of his time in little known sections of Chile, Argen- tina and Peru, where, it Is expected, seeds will be found available for cul- ture in the southern states, at present greatly in need of new grass crops. South America, department experts say, teems with grasses which, while known to botanists, never have been tested as to their agricultural qualities. Othcrs have been tested by South American governments, but never have been_exchanged. All the seeds obtained by Westover will be planted in special- ly prepared soll at the experiment sta- tion here, but it is expected that at least 99 out of every 100 will prove of no value for the United States. Special efforts will be made to se- cure varieties of alfalfa to improve the stralns grown here. The Argentine prairies abound In this grass, the ef- fect of which has been revolutionary on American agriculture. But con- tinual experiment must be made to keep the stock in thriving condition. The many regions in the South American interior which are almost deserts, but which grow ses suit- av.e w0 support cattle, give promise of yielding up some valuable secrets to the present expedition.
