AMUSE ol e NG Ina Claire .in “Grounds for “ Divorce.” . ) A dramatic essay that mov ‘with spirit through three lively acts, pun- ent with satire on-modern murrluel Frethods and spiced with barbs of tru- fsms against very human inconsisten cles, came to the Shubert-Belasco last night with Ina Claire and Bruce Mc: Rae under the title “Grounds for Divorce.” Although Hungarians may | know how to write such plays with vigor and charm, Guy Bolton clearly demonstrates that he understands the art of putting them into English without losing that intangible yerve necessary to the adequate Pre tation of them. s Four thinga combined to make the Belasco Theater the scene of an en- joyable 150 minutes iast night. One was the vehicle, which—although not brand-new in thema or ‘motivatidg fmpulse—aftorded broad: epportuni- ties for the injection p-to-date dramatic effusions. The second was Jna Claire and Bruce - McRae. The third, the remainder of the cast. And the fourth was Bertram Harrison. Making the last the first. for ex- planatory purposes, let it be known that Bertram knows his .business When it comes tostaging a produc- tion such as this. His first act setting was a masterptece of perfection in balance, a Chinese motif, With. walls done in_appraved style, with/plctur esque Chinese miniature gardens and | Jittle arched bridges; and men iand women_scattered about, predominat- ing. The furnishings harmonized wonderfully well. They did not ob- trude and were such as to attract at- tention less through positive qualities than through' the lack of discordant . The sedond act setting wasi equally well don Ufhe play itself: - A wife, neglected by her husband-lawyer specializing on divorce cases, diybrces the man | himself for his i‘r(mjltenl:en‘ht: n‘\‘(el‘(-‘ v im bacl just in cR | S timenin Just fifteen minutes i ng to marty o~ the play. Bruce, as Mau- Tice Sorbler, Parisian divorce attor ney, rattling along like an expre train on the subject of the brutality of husbands who do not pay attention to their wives, at the same time do- i ing a masterly work of nexlecting his own spouse while freeing other ladies from males who are not doing half so good a job.
