Conway Three Times. “I've killed Inez” James E. Con- way, colored, twenty-elght years old, 1618 L street northwest, told his mother this morning about 4 o'clock. She entered the room of her son and daughter-in-law and found the latter dead from a bullet wound in her head, police were informed. Conway went to the home of Dr. Gilbert Sewell, 1181 New Hampshire avenue northwest, and summoned him to attend his wife. Conway was driv- ing his -automobile, the police were told, and was willing to take the physician to his home, but the latter refused to accompary him because he appeared to be under the influence of liquor, it was alleged. When the physician reached the d pronounced the woman ! rfl ce were notified and an Investigation started. Detectives Mul- len, Murphy, Jones and Jackson and nfi{lefle of the third precinct partici- pated. Conway, a chauffeur, was employed 4 resident of Stoneleigh Court until a day or two ago. ad_been married two years, his wife being but eighteen at the time of their marriage. She was a resident of Arlington, Va.. while the husband {;’rmerly resided near Gordonsville, . ‘Wife Had Left Him, ‘It was learned by the police that Inez left her husband three times during their two years of marrled life. Two weeks ago, she left him and went to Chattanooga, Tenn. Soon she started sending special delivery [ letters and telegrams Informing the husband she was sick and wanted to return. * James sent her money for car fare, and she reached home last night about 12 o'clock. A single outcry on part of the wife was heard by her mother-in-law just before the shoot- ng. Conway's automobile was found abandoned In an alley in the north- went_section. Police have been di- rected to search for Conway. He served overseas with the Navy in the world war. » Snatches Woman’s Bag. An unidentified colored boy about thirteen years old snatched a beaded handbag from Fannie P. Serren, 44 New York avenue northwest, on the street near her home last night. The handbag contained $5 in cash and an automobile driver's permit. PATENT OFFICE NEEDS 100 MORE EXAMlNER Civil Service Commission An- nounces Examination Will Be Begun on April 9. The Civil Service Commission Is seeking 100 assistant patent exam! ers, under authorization by Congress, tn order to speed up action on patent applications. Examinations will begin April 9. The entrance salary, effective July 1, I1s $1,860 & year, and increases are provided up to $5,000 & year. Men and women will be admitted to the examinations, which will com- prise mathematics, technics, physics, interpretation- of mechanical draw- ings, French and German, and some branch of engineering. It formerly took fifteen months for initial action by the patent office, the commission announces. Now the maximum time s nine months. About 80,000 applications for patents are received yearly, and are being handled by a present force of 500. The Civil Service Commission also : announced that examinations will be held to fill vacancies in the following positions: Hydrographic and topo- graphic draftsman, coast and geo- detic survey, at $1,400 a yea: - tectural draftsman, quartermaster general's office, at $1,400 a year; coms= puter, coast and geodetic survey, for duty in Washington, D.
