The distance between Macon and Jacksonville can be materially short- ened by following tte Dixie Hichway via Perry, Fitzgerald and Waycross, Ga., and Callahan, Fla. There s one detour betwern the Georgia-Florida line and Callahan, which, when eliminated, will make this route advisable on ac- count, of the shorter distance than the | one via Valdosta. Savannah has many attractions for the south-bound tourist. It is possi- ble to' get through to Jacksonville via Savannah, Darien and Brunswick un- der favorable weather conditions. There are, however, some bad stretches on this rqute. Motorists who go to Florida an- other year will no>doubt be able to take the most direct line south via Ralelgh, Southern Pines, Columblia, Augusta to Savannah or éWaycross and thence to Jacksonville, as Im- provements along thess routes are eing made. When this is done the distance saved over the route now having the most mileage of good roads will be considerable. Many Detours. The A. A. A. scouts dld not recom- mend the route south from Charlotte to Macon via Spartanburg, Greenville, N. C. and Athens, Ga., at this time on account of construction south of the Hartwell, Ga., bridge. It is pos- sible that this grade will be surfaced before the season is over, so that it can be added to the list of recom- mended routes south. There are detours on any route south owing to the large amount of construction golng on. The mini- mum is seven. Complete information as to conditions and detours has been made available to motorlsts through the 464 touring bureaus affiliated with the American Automobile Assoclation Strip maps for the yarious routes will also be available a8 soon as the cor- rections noted on the scouting trip Just completed can be made. Harry M. Horton, local Duesenberg dealer, the trouble comes from Judging experience by the years a motorist has driven, whereas the real test of experlence is in the number of fears he entertains. “The so-called experienced. driver is frequently a hopeless disappointment ‘because he foolishly graduates from the state of mind typified by the beginner,” says Horton. ‘““The beginner seldom has a serious accident because he is think- Ing about the things that might hap- pen. The experienced driver ought to know of a great many other things to | fear, and accordingly should be an even | safter driver. i “The tendency, however, is just the reverse.
