REAL PROPER STAIRWAYS HAVE NO SQUEAKS Important Features of Construc- tion, However, Are Often Overlooked. The importance of the proper things to watch in the construction of stair- ways is often overlooked by the aver- age home bullder—if you get your stalrway built right it will not need shock absorbers or anti-rattlers. Stairs go wrong on other matters than squeaks. When they become dangerous to life and limb the mere fact that they sound as though they might decompose under your Very feot pecomes a fact of relative unim- portance. The squeak glves proof of faulty bullding. but convenience and safety are matter of deslgn. Probably the most obvious thing y is how easily it.can be climbed ou probably couple steepness with dificulty in climbing, Lut these two things do not neces- sarlly go together. A steep stair, properly designed, may take less ef- fort to ascend than one that has a very low ascent. The thing is all in the matter of width of tread to height of riser. Stmple Rule Applies to Stairs. Architects have found a very simple rule of thumb that applies very well to stairs in homes. 1t goes like this: “Take twice the heignt of the riser, plus the width of the tread—trom nosing to nosing—and the result must lie between and 25 7-Inch riser we get 2 by 7 equals 14; minus 14 equals 11." That preferred width of tread. 1If a 10-inch tread {s wanted, then 25 minus equals 15; 15 divided by 2 equals T3 A 10-inch tread and a 7ig-inch rise make @ good combination. Have the treads and the risers all of the same width throughout the en- tire house—excepting _ perhaps those leading to the attic. 1f there is any diffcrence in the treads and riser of "different stairways—look out for accidents, Another thing about designing of stairways has to do with head room.
