Af- fect Liberty Issues—To- day’s Movements. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The NEW YORK, November 10.—The weok In the bond market closed with vrices generally well maintained United States government loans were firm. All the active issues show sub- stantial advances over those prevail- ing a week ago. of a bonus bill seems no longer to affect the liberty bond market. This factor is more than counterbalanced by investment demand based on easy money rates and probably by pur- chases for account of tMe British government preparatory to payment of the interest on its war debt to the United States. High-Grade Rails Firm. Similarly the high-grade investment raily and industrials were firm today @s for the week past. Buying herg 1s, however, more selective with ce taln Issues {n especial favor. Atchison general 4s, for instance, touched 90 today. Probably some of the support for these high-grade bonds comes from abroad, where investors are more anxious for security than for yleld. It is hard to see why the savings bank issues selling to yield less than § per ent should be accumulated by individ- uals subject to income tax charges. WIth banks, of course, the situation is different. In this connection it is a little curi- ous that the middle-grade bonds yield- ing around 6 per cent, such as the Southern Railway 48 and St. Louis, San Francisco prior liens, should be com- paratively neglected. Where Interest Lies. Attention of both Investors and traders seems to be concentrated either on the very high grade or on the spec- ulative bonds. = Southern Railway gen- eral 4s, for instance, selling today be- low 69, have varied only a little over three goints during the year to date. St. Louis San Francisco prior lien A 43 selling today at about the low of the year and ylelding more than 6% per cent have varied only 5 points since the 1st of January. A more no- table instance is found among the in- dustrials, where Hershey Chocolate 65 selling a little below 99 today have varied only a little over 3 points in ten months. Forelgn Group Unsettied. Foreign bonds are influenced more or less by the changing news from abroad. Nevertheless, the losses this week in ‘the face of the disturbing dispatches have been comparatively small, French government 8s and Tl%s are down only fractionally on the week. French Cities issues had a larger decline, as did the Parls- Lyons and Mediterranean 6s, but not more than should have been expected. The loss in the Dutch East Indies is- sues is_due to the competition of the new offering of 5% per cent bonds brought out this week. Seaboard Air Line obligations are all up 1 to 2 points on the week, and sell- Ing at the high of the year, all in re- to the improved earning outlook. er road which has done remark- y well lately is the Wheeling and Lake Erie. Its 412 per cent bonds have reflected this betterment with an ad- vance of more than 2 points, but the prior lien, the consolidated 4s, have lagged behind. Bonds of both the St Paul and Missouri Pacific have been heavy, but not really weak. Week's New Offerings. This week's new offerings, including the ~ $100,000,000 American ' Telephone and Telegraph 515 per cent debentures were, the largest since the second week in_ Jure. The total 15 1,000. Other notable issues were the Alberta 51s and the Dutch East Indies 5is, already referred to. The way in which “all these bonds were taken was encouraging to the investment bankers, STOCK AND COTTON MARKETS LEADERS Weakening of Sterling Exchange Also Vital Factor in Week’s Finance. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, November 10.—An- other sharp advance in stock and cot- ton prices and a further weakening in sterling exchange to & new low record for the year were the out- standing developments of this week's financial markets.
