Chieago Dally News. 1623, BERLIN, September 21.—Berlin to- day was rejoicing in the fact that the first important series of raids by the government's force of “dollar de- tectives,” out in quest of hoarded for- eign currency, which is to be used as a reserve for a new German cur- rency issue, had netted only specu- lators from eastern Europe. These illegal money changers, of whom Berlin says, scornfully, 'that they “came in with nothing but lice and now own limousines,” have been transacting their affairs in the cafes, regarding such places as safer than regular offices. Raids on a dozen Friedrichstrasse |cafes Tuesday night resulted in the | selzure of $50,000 worth of forelgn currency. Twenty-five hundred Amer- ican $1 notes were among the funds captured In one of the raids. Appear- ance of the dollar detectives caused a small panic in most of the raided cafes. Coffee drinkers endeavored to hide their forelgn money under sofas and chairs and did their best to look innocent. GARY, Ind, September 21.—Miss Alberta Brown, negress, was arrested here today and is being held in con- nection With the robbery of $50,000 worth of jewels from the home of Mrs., Robert Ward, at Wilmette, IlL., on August 25. Miss Brown, who is said to have been employed as a maid at the Ward home, is alleged to have disappeared shortly after the robbery was discovered.
