D, Stokes ‘that her hus- tand, the wealthy New York hotel owner, has spent thousands of dollars here in an attempt to obtaln affi- davits stating that she formerly was an inmate of a nototrious Chicago re- sort. Mr. Stokes allesed numerous indiscretions in his suit for divorce. Mrs. Stokes' counter suit still is pending in the New York court. Robert E. Crowe, state's attorney, appointed Charles S. Wharton, assist- ant state’s atttoreny, to investigate the charges by Mrs. Stoke ‘Whar- ton said indictment charging con- spiracy may result, while Frank T. Jordan, attorney for.Stokes, declared that suit will be started against the prosecutor for usurpation of powers. Mrs. Stokes Supported. Testimony of witnesses so far ques- tioned, the prosecutor said, have sup- ported Mrs. Stokes' charges that her husband has spent thousands of dol- lars here seeking the affidavits.
