This means that a 30x313 tire can now be inflated to betw: 30 and 35 pounds instead of the cu tomary 50 pounds. The lmportance of this announc ment is recognized when considor: tion is given to the advantages th underinflatjon brings to the motorist. John A. MacMillan, president of the company, in commenting on this sub- ject, points to five definite advantages or_underinflation. He says: “First, and of greatest importance, is the additional comfort that can be secured by the shock-absorbing qual ities of reduced air pressure. In the selection of an automobile the cu tomer xives great thought to com- fort. He carefully examines spring construction and in many cases he equips his car with shock absorbers But the fatiguing vibrations and joits of rough roads can better be over- come by the simplest expedient of re- ducing the air pressure a few pounds than in any other way. “Of second importance is the fact that tires inflated to a high pressure are obhviously infurious to the car and instead of providing a soft cushion to relieve the chassis and body from the dire hock of road obstructions, & highly inflated tire actually accen- tuates each bump or vibration eo that reduced air pressure means fewer re- nuirs and longer life to the automo- bile “Two other obvious advantages lie in the facts that the reduced air pressure prevents skidding and that | a tire that is underinflated vlelds to the obstructions in the road, and therefore puncturcs less readily than one that is highly inflated. “For this same reason underinfla- tion protects the tread of a tire from chips and cuts and causes it to deliver service.” AUTO TIRES IMPROVED. A recent tire survey brings out the fact that the demand for tires in 19 { averaged 2.17 tires per car, 38 com- pared with 4.85 in 1916. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are annually lost in practically all sections of the couritry due to lack of regulaf measures in the spring of the year when the frost is coming out of the ground, during which period also there is a greater percentage of rain. Some states have taken the precau- tion of mandatory laws requiring lesser loads on trucks on the im- proved roads of the state or inter- county highway system. This has proved a considerable saving in the expenditure of maintenance moneys. As_pointed out by the National Motorists' ~ Aseoclation officials. an overloaded truck in the spring of the year can cause a hundredfold more damage to a highway than the pas- senger or pleasure motor vehicle. “It 18 about time that the money spend- ers of state legisiatures thought | more about conservation of highways already built than of adding addi- tional “tax burdena in the form of special taxes against the use and ownership of the passenger vehicles or the family flivver,” states Fred- eric H. Caley, secrctary of the Na- tional ~ Motorists’ Association at Washington. “Werare not in any sense opposed to-the proper opera- tion of the motor truck or bus line, but we do believe that officials hav- ing jurisdiction over highways that cost thousands of dollars shouid care- tully watch the road bed at this time of year and curtail the loads allowed on ‘those highways when evidence it shown that the road is being de stroyed or seriously damaged by heavy unit vehicles.
