They stood in the alcove be- tween the large reception room and the ballroom. leaving the space usu- ally occupled for this purpose, to be used for extra boxes; so large was the demand that boxes were also placed in the balcony. Mrs. Davis, ho stood beside the Secretary of War, wore a_charming gown of mauve chiffon beaded in Mrs. Hines wore a gown of black jet and a huge corsage bouquet of orchids.
