SAYS MINERIOTER | BARREDGNING D Reporter Identifies One o( Herrin Defendants Second .. Time—On Stand Today. By the Associated Press. MARION, IIl, March 20.—Cross-ex- anmmnatton of “Donald M. Ewing, a Chlcago newspaper'man, who was.the only reporter at Herrin, 111, when the riot last June incident to the coal mine strike clalmed a toll of more than twenty non-union’ workers' lives, remained to be finished today at the second murder trial growing out of the disorders Ewing, one of two witnesses yes- terday, for the second time identiffed Bert Grace, one of the six defendants, as the man who, pointing a gun, kept Ewing from giving water to one of the riot victims lying fatally wound- ed in the street after he had been tted to five other non-union men and shot down. Ewing testificd that distributed by the Associated Press, for which he then was a Staff corre- =pondent, he had said the bodies of the six men he saw in the street had been dragged over rough ground and had gravel imbedded in them. but in a dispatch that he later had learned that the wounds had been made by gun shot. Reporter Makes Denial. The reporter. now employed by the Chicago Tribune, denied he had left the Assoviated Press because of his work at Iferrin. e testified that general good work, including that done at Herrin, had gained him an increased salary and a leave of ab- sence.
