Shares Weak. RT P. WEST. Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, March The stock market started in today with an ef- fort to continue the recovery of the two previous days. But when the, professional element detected stocks coming out in quantity and realized that there was no public in the mar- 1 ket to help along any buying mov ment, they abruptly switched to the other side. There was considerable * bull campaign is to be re d, that | it must be under different | exhip. One opinion was that United § ! Steel common would be the new le 4 er, the market having shown its Jdis- inclination to y longer follow Stocks of the type of Baldwin Loc alk, if the motive, Studebaker, American Can and California Petroleum. All these four were heavily sold and along with { American Wool and some of the oils, Cosden, led the market down. Chemical Stocks Weak., As an instance of the extremely narrow and professional character of the trading, Republic Tron and Steel, which had sold as high as 63% at the outset, broke on_ running sales of a nall quantity of stock from 621 to notably 59%. then on only two transactions of 4 hundred shares each jumped back to 61. 1ling of the Virginia Chemi- «cal issue as resumed after a brief rally early in the day and the stocks made new low records. { Railway shares were borne down again under selling by people who had bought expecting another I)rv!- lant showing in the February traftic cere greatly disap- statements falling off in net pointed by th income as compared with January. The outstanding fact about the stock market was that public interest | has for the time being completely waned and the field left to the profes- suals. Outside business conditions altogether too favorablé to war- ny large downward movement, expecially in view of the considerable decline wh prices have had from their winter's 'high points. On the other hand the violent and artificial speculation of three and four weeks ago disguested the conservativ while driving away outside investors, and it will be hard to rearouse inter- est on the part of these two elements. The advance had no effect in the oil cks today. There was hardly an office in the financial district today in which the tip to buy steel common was not in evidence. Nearly everybody in the street had it long before the opening, and the story in every case was the | same: “A big pool has just been formed in steel common—one of the strongest pools which ever operated In the stock—and it is in for a big rise. Buy It." Thus ran the story, and to make it seem authentic there was quite a bit of activity in steel. Of course, there were those who talked as if they had got the tip from “the real people.” There was ne thing, however, that s ing. The tip on steel usually s the report that a big stock dividend | or a sizable extra in cash is likely, but neither of these things was men- tloned. Afternoon {rading Drags. The pro- fessionals were _still experimenting with the short side and succeeded in zetting Baldwin Locomotive -down be- low 138 and Studebaker below 122 Steel common lost its early gain and rallway shares continued heavy, but here and there was some weakne. PINES OF SOUTH | ARE DISAPPEARING; Forests Diminishing Rapidly, Sen- ate Committeg Finds Dur- ing Tour. % The special Senate committee on re- forestation of which Senator McNary df Oregon is chairman, returned yester- ay from its first tour of Inspection, hav- ing visited Florida, Mississippl and Louls- fana. Senator McNary said the com- mittee had fourd the pine forests of the south diminishing rapidly and that unless reproduction is practiced a sub- gtantial disappearance of the piney yoods would occur at a time earlier than was generally anticipated. i Happily this situation will not oc- ur.” Senator McNary explained. “be- ause the people of the south are horoughly aroused over their dimin- shing forests and are determined to ent in some national plan for re- orestation that will insure a pro- luctive crop in the southern states for all ne. This strong public senti- ment Is an assurance that whatever plans are formed and regulations pre- qgribed will be adopted and followed vy the timber owners and mill opera- tors in the pine region.” Much_valuable data was collected at the hearings held by the commit- tee, Senator McNary said, which would be of great help in formulating some natlonal scheme for the preservation and reproduction of the country's forests. Hearings will_be resumed by the committees in Washington next Mon- day. ——— = RECEIVERSHIP TO END.
