U. Successful men in the newspaper fleld are intensely human, said J. Thomas Lyons, national advertisin manager of the Sun newspapers o Baltimore, in an address vesterday afternoon before the journalism class of George Washington University. He sald that all of the great papers of the United States, those whose names were household words and {which had the respect of communi- tles, were based on the desire of thelr owners to perform public serv- ce. The speaker warned against the idea that big advertisers had any in- fluence over the editorial depart- ments of modern newspapers. He declared that the influence and busi- ness of a paper were based upon the | confidence of the public and that control by advertisers would destroy that confidence and curtail the busi- ness. Mr, Lyons said that advertising managers at present made it their business to assist merchants in doing the kinds and amounts of advertis- ing that would bring them the best results instead of trying to get all fthey could out of the merchandising business. He added that his fiel offered an excellent opportunity for young women, for they were more adequately equipped to meet the needs of women who used the news- papers to assist them in purchasing.
