None of these substitutes can in any way compare in w character and "quality with Lbonite. All of these at- tempts have failed, because he imitations lack the lubri- cating qualities, the distine- e consistency of shredded »il. refined by a procese known to us only. 4 - Therefore a word of warn- ing from the makers to pur- chasers has become impera- tive. Of these troubles any electric service /man will tell us that 90 per cent are due to the condition of the commutator. If the commutatar is blackened all over, in- ‘roubles. | stead of having a shinny copper colo it is a result of dirt and grease which | from much time, or through have collected through the brushes which, | sparking, have burned the commutator surface. If copper and carbon dust is prevalent over the inside of the gener- ator housing it indicates cutting of fhe commutator, usually due to the use of brushes of improper composition. Poor contact between the brushes and "THE SUNDAY the commutator is'a very troublesome thing in motor and generator operation. This is the result of weak brush springs or sticking brushes. The commutator will_be burned black all over by the constant arcing between the brushes and the commutator. Another cause of | arcing is a loose connection somewhere in the circuit. The color of the flame produced by the abovs causes is reddis |ax compared with the sharp blue which are produced by an open circuit in the armature. This trouble usually results in a flat commutator bar. owing to the fact that whenever the brushes touch this bar an intense blue spark results, burning away the ntetal. tor is caused by shorl-circuited field oils. The owner-driver can _eorrect trouble when due to dirt or poorly fitted brushes, but he cannot hope to deal with the causes of the last three troubles. No attempt should be made to repair arma- tures on which there are grounded, open or short-circuited coils. They should be sent to the factory. Sometimes a short is caused by copper dust between the bars or a coil end is burned off at the commutator bar. These breaks can be repaired by an electriclan, but he should mot be allowed to attempt re- winding. : This devic. migne ve callea an electri- cal valve, which allows generatof cur- rent to go to the battery but does not allow battery current to flow back to the generator. It consists chiefly of an electro-magnet and two contact points, through which is made or broken the circuit between the generator and the battery. The whole device is usually inclosed in a small metal case about 13,x2x2 inches, located generally on the top of the generator. There are two windings of wire around the core of the. electro-magnet men- tioned, the fine wire or “voltage™ wind- STARTS PROMPTLY IN THE COLDEST WEATHER The behavior of Dodge Brothers Motor Car on zero days is a fair example of its fitness the year round. You turn the switch, step on the button, and the motor starts—without undue noise or delay. The reasons are readily understood: The coordination of the power plant is wgll nigh flawless. The slightest impulse sets it in motion. The battery—6-cells, 12-volts—is unusually large. A high-vacuum carburetor so thoroughly vaporizes the gasoline that it ignites instantly under the spark. The electrical system is remarkably efficient and cuts to a minimum the usual voltage loss between battery and starter. Finally, the starter, itself—an admirable ex- ample of its kind—is directly united with the engine by a chain drive which isalways in mesh —a fact having much to do with the prompt- ness and quietness of its action. o price of SEMMES MOTOR COMPANY 1132-1134 Connecticut Ave. Main 6660 “The Good Club Coupe The good Maxwell is definitely fulfilling the promise made two years /ago that it would be made so good.that leadership would come to it by spontaneous public recognition. As soun as the points come in contact the heavy winding on the cut-out core will be- come magnetized and holds the points together as long as the voltage of the.| generator current is higher than the voltage of the storage battery. When the engine is slowed down to a point where the generator current is of lesser voltage than that of the battery, the flow of current will be from the battery to the generato! 'his reversal causes MODEL 1923—PART 3. the series winding of the cut-cut mag- net to de-magnetize the core, allowing the spring to pull the points apart. This 18 necessary to prevent a_discharge of battery current through the generator. The ammeter always records what current {8 passing to or from the bat- tery. It should never show any current flowing when the engine is stopped and all lights off If the cut-out fails to open, the ammeter will show a dis- charge. Failure to open the circuit is usually caused by “stuck” points. This some- times happens when the contact points have become roughened and poor con- tact causes heating_and melting to- gether of the metal. Burning out of the voitage cofl. or the sudden breaking of this circuit may leave the series winding in position ,to hold the points together as long as current is flowing either way. This results in a discharged battery. Failure of the points to close may be due to a burned out or shorted voltage cofl in the cut-out or by dirty contact points. Upon the cut-out depends the health of the electric system. Anything which indicates failure of its action should be regarled with suspicion. The ammeter is the operator's guide as to the condition of the cut-out. When | any of the above symptoms are noticed, | it is'best to have the cut-out tested af | a garage pPossessing the proper equip- ment for this purpose. It does not pay to spend money to have a garageman try to repair broken or burned-out coils. 1t is always more satisfactory to install A new coil. or if the cut-out is proving troublesome, to get a new one.
