PICKETT. NLY two more days and Ash Wednesday will sound the warning for the penitential period of forty days, closing one of the most remarkable seasons ever known in the capital. It was supposed that the illness and inability of Mrs. Harding to take part in social life would throw a complete damper over everything of a gay nature, but the first lady of the land did not intend it should be so. From her big, cheery apartment in the White House she has made herseli felt throughout the months almost as much as have other President’s wives who were sufficiently robust, but not socially inclined. TFeari lest the card parties and balls for charity might lag—as they naturally Wou { she withheld her name, she has not only stood as a patroness for dozens of charity events, but she has kept in close touch with the ouiside world, both political and social, through her woman friends, and has cncouraged and abetted them in as much social activity as possible. HL close of Congress, near at hand, will bring an almost complete de tion of the capital by the social world, the President and Mrs. Hardir naving laid plans for their departure for the south, while un- loubtedly the Viee President and Mrs. Coolidge also will leave the capi- I The departure of the Secretary of State and Mrs. Hughes for South America ia companying them—and that of other members of the cabinet. who have plans laid for an early departure, will leave Washington almost deserted officially, only its big working force that keeps the government machinery moving remaining here. Most of the diplomats will many representatives who have remained in Washington quite steadily before, during and since the war will either go on government junkets or hie themselves home to look after their neglected districts WEVER, there is a portion of the social world who will wear their sackeloth and ashes lightly, going on with dinner parties, dances and even carrying out some quite consequental events in the name of charity. The splendidly arranged dinner dance which Mrs. George D. Hope will zive in honor of out-oi-town visitors on Ash Wednesday, when c will have nearly a hundred guests, and the reception and musical on | the cvening of Shrove Tuesday, with Mrs. Francois Berger Moran as hostess, are two of the most important happenings in society’s name, vhile the card party to be given at Wardman Park Hotel at 2:30 o'clock | the afternoon of February 21, for the benefit of Russian relief, will be at- nded by hundreds. In addition to cards and the Chinese game newly wtroduced here, there will be dancing by the pupils of Minnie Hawke, and Princess Bertha Cantacuzene and a group of debutantes will sell Iussian cigarcttes and confections, which are being sent from New York. M ROBERT LANSING, who has assiduously devoted her time to Russian relicf work, has Mme. Ekengren assisting her, and the list i which includes almost the entire social roster of Wash- 1s prominent workers Mrs., Frederick Dent Grant, Mrs. Charles S, Tlamlin, Mrs. Charles Warren, Mrs. Wayne Parker and Mrs. Frank S. Hight. With but few events arranged for the afternoon of the 21st, society folk will be willing to devote several hours to sipping Russian tea, bling Russian dainties, and playing cards in the name of charity. Princess Cantacuzene will, of course, be the spirit of the afternoon. patronesses. ton. has NUMBER of worien in congressional life will hold their regular days at home throughout the month, and tomorrow the forty and more wonien of the congressional circle who make their winter home at Con- sress Hall will hold a reception there. To pay one's respects to forty two or three women in official life in a single afternoon will mean much in the official world, and this annual reception is always one of the most delightful of the entire season. Mrs. Eugene Hale, Mrs. Frank B. Kellogg and other ladeis of the Senate circle will receive Thursday afternoon. Tu annual breakfast of the Congressional Club, now a powerful social factor in official life, will be given at Rauscher’s tomorrow, when the club members and their guests will be afforded an opportunity to pay their parting respects to the gracious and %raceful outgoing president, Mrs. Joseph S. Frelinghuysen, and greeting the equally accomplished and charming new president, Mrs. James F. Brynes, to whom will fall the pleasure of presiding over the august body of women. One of the most commendable acts of the club. at its recent election was placing Mrs. John B. Henderson, the good angel of the club, on its list as honorary vice president for life. Many women have remained in the capital after their fathers or husbands ceased their official career, but almost without exception they have fallen away from the official side of life. Mrs. Hen- derson, whose husband, the late John B. Henderson, was senator from Missouri, has never for one moment ceased to closely associate herself with the congressional set Plan Reception and Tea | Tea to Be Held Tomorrow At Powell Exhibition | At Children's Hospital informal reception and tea for 5 % Lucien Whiting Powell will be| 3onday, February 12, the board of eld from 4 to 6 o'clock this after-|directors and the ladies' board of noun at the Art Center, 1106 Connecti-| the Children's Hospital will entertain ut avenue northwest, where Mr.|jits members at tea at th Vowell's foreign and Amerian paint- | ] the hospital ings on view.
