Latest Announcements of Church News, Activities and 'Services MINSTRY CANDIDATES | TAKE PHYSEAL TESTS Bishop Murray Insists on All- Around Fitness for Arduous Duties. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, February 10.—A man'g heart must be right if he is to be a minister in the Protestant Eplsco- val Church in the diocese of Mary- land. And that is not so trite as it sounds, for it is not enough for Bishop John Gardner Murray that the | minister's heart be “right” spiritual- 1y, It also must be sound physically. Candldates for the Protestant Epis- copal ministry in Maryland must take a physical examination. This rule has been in effect for the past two vears and a regular examining phy- sician was designated by the bishop. Physical Tests. “Only recently,” the physician said, “I exa date who had an udusually weak heart. 1 could not accept him as a candidate for orders in the church. 11is heart could not stand the strain: { facing the congregation some Sunday morning he might drop dead in the pulpit. ~ Yet if there had not been some svstem of physical examina- | tions for candidates this man might ! have been ordained.” The doctor explained that Bishop | Murray had instituted the physical| tests about two years ago. It had heen discovered, he said, that men | unfit physically ere gettin lnlnl 10 ministry and after a few years| they broke down and becam heavy responsibility to the church. ! The work of a minlister in the Prot- estant. Episcopal Church Is arduous, the doctor sald, and a weakly con- | stituted man cannot stand fit. The‘ physiclan has found many candidates | suffering from nervous disorders. | lung affections and weak hearts. All have been turned aw . though they had settled upon the ministry as the work of their lives. Rule Applies to AllL The doctor had to tell them that| hey had better adopt some calling | ss hurtful to the nervous system. Vsually they are between eighteen and twenty-five, have finished col- =gs and are eager to enter theo- logical seminaries. Candidates apply Murray. If he is satisfied with their other qualifications he sends them to the docter for physical examina- | tion, | The rule applies as well to minis- | ters of other denominations who de- | sire to become ministers in the Epis- copal Church and to laymen who seek to become deacons or “readers.” | BAPTIST W. PUSHING ARRANGEMENT FOR BIBLE CONTEST Date of Opening Will Probably Be Revealed Next Saturday. Arrangements for the fifty com- munity Bible question contest of the Bible study department of the District of Columbia Federation of Women's Clubs are being pushed, although funds for carrying it through have not yet been secured, Several members of the committee in charge of the work met with Mrs. Louise Harding Earll, the chairman, last Tuesday at the Mt. Vernon Place M. E. Church, South. It was decided to postpone the opening of the con- test until some time next month. The date of the opening will possibly be made known by next Saturday, Mrs. Earll stated today. These commit- tees—the missionary, individuals and young _people’s mittees—discussed at length the progress already made to conduct the contest. Similar meetings of these committees will be held at the same time next Tuesday at the church. Mrs. Earll stated today there is every indication that the number of entries in the next contest will far surpass those of any previous con- test.
