The rise of Samuel Hart from the obscure position of cash boy to gen- ¢ral manager of ono of Washington's largest department stores reads like a chapter from the life of a hero in a Horatio_Alger book. Taking as his slogan ‘“Work, work, work!” Mr. Hart climbed the ladder of success one rung at a time and as he climbed took with him the estcem of those he passed. Born {in Washington fifty-four years ago, he was graduated from the public schools of this city and immediately chose the mercantile business as the field of his endeavor. His first posi- tion was that of cash boy with the firm of Lansburgh & Bro. He never left that company and attributed much of his success to the fact that he knew how to “stick.” Mr. Hart's first advancement was to the position of stock boy, after which he became a cashier. He was next made a sales- man, buyer, assistant manager and, finally, manager. He had held the last position for twenty-three years and had completed forty years of un- interrupted service with Lansburgh & Bro. when he died.
