O, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY : Sherlock. l There is a dead man on the floor, some party slew him with an ax; official sleuths, some three or four, are getting down to carpet tacks. Alas, their methods are no good, they were cut out for other trades, and they’re composed of solid wood above their stalwart shoulderblades. A subtle crime like this demands the highest type of brains in men; official Hawkshaw helpless stands, and sighs, “I'm baffled once again.’ 'Tis true that Hawkshaw does at times some little trifling triumph see; he wades around among the crimes and blunders to a vyictory. But this is purely acident, " by skill the triumph's won—i believe the gifted gent who writes sleuth fiction by the ton. Official Hawkshaws wildly chase them- selves around, as in a ring; they're baffled every time they face the sim- plest puzzle life can spring. But now the shining Sherlock comes, upon his brow an ample wreath: he glances at the dead man’s thumbs and takes a close-up of his teeth. Upon his famous knees he drops, his | tapeline and his glass appear azes at the baffled cops, and says, There is no problem here.” It’s all so simple to the sleuth whose intel- lect is wide and deep: he reaches out and grabs the truth, while bai-! fled cops sit down and weep. Year after year we read the tale of Sher- locks keen and Hawkshaws blind; and still the criminals in jail were put there by the Hawkshaw kind. (Copyright). WALT MASON.
