BREAKS PRIOR RECORDS Feat Performed by Largest College Broadoasting Station in World, Located at Troy, N. Y. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. TROY, N. Y., February &.—¥or the first time since the discovery of ver- bal communication more than 3,000 miles overland has been accomplished. This feat was performed at the in. stance of radiophone tion WHAZ, the largest college broadcasting station in the world conducted by the Rensselaer Polytechnio Institute at Troy, N. Y. The two-way communi- cation was carried on with absolute success and at the will of the opera- tors with station CFCN at Calgary, Alberta, Canada, a distance of ap- proximately 2,000 miles airline, and breaks all previous records for twe way overland radio telephone com- munication by a wide margin, and it is not believed that this distance has ever been exceeded even over water. The new redio station at the Rena- selaer Polytechnic Institute, although established only at the opening of the college year last fall thmufh a gift of 350,000 from the Roeblings. engineering graduates of the insti. tute, famous as the builders of the Brooklyn bridge, has already become well known as the most versatile as well as the widest in range and one of the most efficlent of the class B installations in the United States. Unlike nearly all of its companion high-power broadcasting equipments, station WHAZ does not oconfine itself to broadcasting, but enters into all .;’z:fir Phases of wireless activity as Heard Over the Cemttnent. Of course, the Troy Polytechnle station, like many others, has been heard over considerably greater tances than that of the two-way t In fact, station WHAZ announced last week the establishment of a new world’s record for long distance broadcasting of concert progr: clear reception of both music and speech having been reported from three communitis 1lo, Wailuku Hatku in the Hawallan Islands, a d tance of approximately 5,500 mile Its regular Monday evening concert programs and its monthly interna- tional midnight programs have been heard in France as well as through- out the North American continent from coast to coast and from Alaska to Panama. It is not unusual for its broadcasts to be reported heard in all of the forty-eight states of the Union, in every province of Canada, in Mexico, Cuba, Porto Rico and the Panama Canal Zone. Widely scattered Instances of these reports have come from a northwest lice oMcer in Hodgson, Manitol a snowbound prospector in Alaska, & sojourner {n the eternal summer of Miami, Fla.; a Cuban planter, a minister entertain- ing his little group of parishioners high up in the mountains of Lake o allf.; a rancher in Montana, a nment official in Mexico City and an engineer in Panama. The point is, however, that such Hsteners Ve no way of replying, except by telegraph or letter. This has true, heretofore, even of the power, long-wave-length trans- on experiments carried on with nd by the large commercial companles. Not All Equally Basy. As all radiophone listeners know, it is one matter to “pick up” @ program broadcast from a station, say 0 miles away, by accldent, and en en- tirely different thing to “recetve” from a particular station at that dls- tance, by design, at a definite time and regardless of all kinds of in- terference. ~Yet that {s what both stations, WHAZ and CFCN, did early on the morning of January 13 last. A previous test, hastily arranged and quite casually after the midnight transcontinental program from sta- tion WHAZ at Troy on the second Work was then hurried on & new super- selective receiving set, which had al. ready b R and more complete test was scheduled fo four days later. That tims, in spite of every severe local electrical dis- turbances, communication was es- tablished during the pre-arranged period and was maintained as long as desired, actually for more than an hour. The communications of the test wero reported heard at many remote points. There was a heavy snowstorm in progress in Troy at the time and the static was ex- tremely bad. Sparks were continu- ally jumping across the antenna serles’ condenser and it was.pos- sible to operate a small electro-static motor by connecting it across the antenna and ground wires. Recelving Set Described. The radio engineers at the Rensse- laer Tech describe the new recelving set, which they used in this record- breaking test, as a conventional type of superheterodyne, employing a max- imum of eleven vacuum tubes. Eight were used at tha time of the test with Calgary. The 400-meter wave length of the incoming signal is first changed to 3,000 metes signal is then amplified by a e-stage radio fre- quency amplifier and passed on to & detector tube.
