WALLSTREETLIT FEVERHLY ACT Very Heavy Buying Wave De- velops in Today’s Session. Marked Advances. BY STUART P. WEST. Special Dispatch Lo The Star. NEW YORK, February 6.—Trading ©n the stock exchange today reached tho largest proportions of the year so far., The extent of the increase in ectivity was sufficiently Indicated by the fact that at one time the record- ing instrument was nearly twenty minutes behind the actual market. There was no doubt whatever that public interest was on the increase &nd that non-professional buying was playing a lurger part than at any time this season. Heavy realizing sales were encountered as prices moved forward, but always these were offset By the bringing up of new leaders. Sugars Lead Advance. ‘The most consistent buying occurred in the sugar group. especially in Cuba an preferred and Cuban American. ere was no trade news to account for this. It was simply the market’s response to the confident feeling in the sugar trade that prices are on the up- srade and that the advance will be- ‘come more pronounced at the close of ithe Cuban grinding season, little over « month from now. Stee! common, Haldwin Locomotive nd Studebaker moved forward an- “other point in the first hour. but sub- equently their advance was checked ,by profit-taking. Pool operations went on actively in Crucible Steel on talk Jof a resumption of dividends later in the year. New high records were made in a number of_ specialties, among them American Mack Trucks, Mathie- ®on Alkali and Corn Products. Some large blocks of Colorado Fuel had to be taken at 26, after which the price promptly jumped to i Tobacco Stocks Active. Tobaeco stocks were helped by the statement de on Monday ° that earnings were the hest iu the history f most of these companies. The im- provement in the leather trade was reflected in higher prices for the Cen- tral Leathers and the American Hide and Leathers : Railway shares received quite as ‘much attention as the industrials, with Union Pacific, Canadian Pacific &nd Chicago and Northwestern the lead- ers among the dividend-paying group and Southern Railway, the St. Pauls, the Missouri Pacific and Pere Marquett most conspictous among the non-divi- dend payers. Review and Outlook. was very little in news to account further mavked expansion in the ~tock hange dealings and the in- creased activity in the bond list, Wall street at no time has been seriousldy rald of an Anglo-Turkish clash. Tt has felt sure that the new Turkish &overnment would not go to war over Mosul or he other points in dispute, because the opposing odds cere altogether too great. Conse- was not at all surprised to Turks were ready to ~iED a new ¥ which would leave the question of the Mosul oil territory 10 be disposed of later o1 What the demo security markets re that for a month only awalting some intelligent news from abroad to continue to discount the favorable course of home trade. Better Near East News. The_virtual elimination of the near east danger was ‘one of the develop- ments most desired. As for the Ruhr situation the financial community reached the conclusion a week ago “hat there was no likelihood of any erious political consequences result- ng from it, that the whole matter had settled down_ into an struggle the outeome of Which hard to see but which in any could not disturb the bu tion in this country. The rise which started toward the close of last week and which re- wulted today in the most active and huoyant market of the year so far was &imply a_reflection of this judgment On the whole the upward movement wa orderly, but there were many instances which suggested that Wall Street pools were pushing ahead a bit too fast. The stock market closely resembled that of Jast midsummer, which was brought to = close on Labor day. Sterling ¥ Sterling excl & cent in the § cember’s Ligh Th outside today's for the the was event ame ng last T which at the same time t approach 1o ohl-time lagt three vears. French exchange was fairly steady, and French and Belglan bonds rallied another point or so0. These. however, were more the accompaniment of the cheerful feeling n the markets generally than an ex- yression of opinion regarding the up- ®hot _of the latest punitive measures of the French across the Rhine. The stock market continued to show extraordinary vitality through- out the afternoon. Selling by the speculative following having profits to secure was extremely heavy, but §t was absorbed without the least dif- floulty. The features during the last hour were the motor stocks, some of the equipments, the smelting issues and the shares of gas companies. Studebaker Reaches 120. Studebaker reached 120 and Bald- win Locomotive made & new high for the current movement when it struck 137. Chandler Motors, which only & few days ago had sold below 62, crossed 0. The understanding in its case is that company interests which were not partienlarly enthusiastic a month ago now have changed their attitude and that this is showing in the mar- et action of Chandler stock. The Willys Overlands, Packard Motors and even the Plerce-Arrows were drawn along in the wake of Studebaker and Chandler. Brooklyn Union Gas, Columbia Gas, the new Consolidated ‘Gas and North America among the public utility group all made new highs. American Smelting crossed 60 on heavy buying. (Copyright, 1023.) WALL STREET NOTES. American Loco Makes Record. Coco Cola Sales Jump. Bpeclal Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 6.—From the standpoint of money involved, the American Locomotive Company re- celved during January the largest order in its history for that month. Ten railroads have ordered 163 loco- notives of different types, to cost approximately $10,000,000. Ex-dividend today: American Smelt- ing and Refining preferred, Pressed Steel Car preferred and St. Mark's Mineral Land. __The Coca Cola Sales Company sold about 1,100,000 gallons of sirup in January, compared with 500,000 last ¥ear in_the same month. New York Air Brake common stock today got to a new high for the year, reflecting not only improved earnings of the company itself, but also the general prosperity In the rajlway equipment business. The 1922 figures are esti- snated to have been around $5 on the common, with the jpects for the coming twelve months well ahead of that amount. Increasing attention has been paid §n the last few days to Kennecott r, which was especially active and strong among the copper shares today. The meat of Kennecott's ait- tiation is generally .believed to be en Copper, the capital stock of Which is practically all owned by Xennecott. Prices were practically the samo as those of a week &go. The latter part of last week lambs dropped to 22 cents, but teday the market is back to 25 and 27 cents. The cold weather lessened receipts of poultry this morning. Receipts were about equal to the demand, how- ever, and no material advance in prices were reported. “When flakes come down, prices go up,” was said of the egg market this morning. Egg prices have advanced since last week, today’s prices ranging from 43 to 48 cents. No change was reported in butter prices, although there was an advance of 14 cent in New York. BY J. C. ROYLE. Special Dispateh to The Star, NEW YORK, February 6.—It became apparent today that the tendency in business and industrial circles towara mergers and consolidations, which has been a featurs of the last few monthe, has lost it momentum at least tempo- rarily. This is attributed at least ir some quarters to recently renewed attacks on the Federal Trade Commis slon and campalgns designed to cur- tail governmental supervision and control of business. Some concerns, it was said by thoss in close touch with the situation, hope that the powers of the commission might be restricted, if not abrogate ! entirely, Other business organization: through their legal representatives expressed concern as to the effect of their plans, it any change should be made, Board Has Fine Support. Men, however, who have be ha closest possible touch with the com mission and with legislative matters essed the firm belief today tha Wwas no possibility that the powers of the commission would lessened. They ited out that v was littie possibility of any cong sional action prior to the adjournme: of Congress, less than a month fr today, ‘and that the make-up of th. next Cougress would assure eve firmer support to the commission tha it enjoys at present, Two "former members of the con mission Who now have retired fror that body were emphatic in declarine that any disorganization to busines {resulting’ from either hope or f change So far as the commission v concerned was unwarranted. J Garland Pollard, former membe the commission, declared attacks the commission would be without r« sult. and William B. The fancy worsted offerings of 1ha American Woolen Company are un derstood to have met with a heart welcome among the buyers, and arders now pouring in are expected to dis pose of all the large company de sires to sell at present prices, which are well above those of a year ago. There is evidence that some buyerm have placed orders for textiles recently in far greater volume than their needs required in expectation that these or- ders would be scaled down or that ad- vancing prices would give them a profi’ from resales later. Manufacturers of! ove garments notifying their customers that price advances =hortly must follow the present upward move in raw mate- rials and advising them to make their purchases now. Advances in crude oil are stimulat- ing plans for feld work and adding to the volume of inquiries for pipe and tubes. Pipe has advanced and the de- mand continues heavy.
