Miss TRACY LyoN. New York, House guest of Miss Anna Hamlin. Capital Will Give 1923 Gay Reception Despite No White House Function Vice President and Mrs. Coolidge to' Receive. While Secretary and Mrs. Hughes Will Be Hosts at Diplomatic Breakfast. PNOERW 0D of SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. ASHINGTON stands on the verge of its most brilliant day in al the year, and even with the White House New Year day recep: tion missing, official and unofficial society will see the passin of this great event with interest. The Vice President and Mrs i Coolidge will receive in their apartment some hundreds of guests from the | ofiicial world, and ranking next in interest and far exceeding it in bril- liancy will be the diplomatic breakfast which the Secretary of State and Mrs. Hughes will give in the Pan-American Union at noon. A number of ! other members of the President’s cabinet will keep open house, one of the most noticeably missing receptions being that in the home of the Secre- tary of the Navy, which was held in unbroken line through the Spanish- ‘American and the world war. and for as many years back as the ordinary ; ‘citizen of Washington can remember. The former Secretary of the Navy #nd Mrs. Daniels gave especially delightful receptions, adding dancing as| & feature. [ HRISTMAS week turns Washington from a national capital into the semblence of any other city of its size, save for the more or less pic- {uresque events in progress at embassies and legations, and it took a big| {tretch of the imagination to find anything but typical America in thei ijery many small balls and dances-that kept the younger element of socie- | :t{y awake long after their accustomed time. Hundreds of cadets from | West Point and Annapolis and from the military schools of the country | |Fairly overran the city, and lent color and sprightliness to all debutante; Isemi-debutante and even younger parties. Every household boasting an | extra chamber entertained a house party, and practically every school‘: worth while in the whole country was represented by numerous students. 'NE\\' YEAR day will mark the dividing line between the semi-official! and the real official season, and from Monday on. the capital will as- sume its most austere phase. The cabinet women, having selected their two official Wednesdays at home, there is a query in the minds of official Washington whether or not there’ will be the old-time tea table or whether cabinet women will revert to the theories of Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt, who, when mistress of the White House, advised that no re- freshments be served. There is every chance that the cosy institution will remain, and that the mistresses of the cabinet homes of today will | have a gayly decorated tea table, with many of their friends assisting. BRINGING quite a thrill is the expected arrival in New York Tuesday of the British debt commission, headed by the Rt. Hon. Stanley Baldwin, who will be accompanied by Mrs. Baldwin and their daughter, Miss Baldwin. A large suite has been engaged for the commission at the Shoreham Hotel, and accompanying Mr. Baldwin will be Mr. Mon- tague Norman, Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Grigg, Mr. E. Rowe Dutton and Mr. | Loring Christie. The ambassador and Lady Geddes will entertain at din- ner for the members of the mission on Saturday night, January 6, and on the night of January 9 society en masse, official and resident, will attend the reception given at the British embassy in their honor. 'ASHINGTO: pet charity ball, that for the benefit of the Children’s Hospital, will be given at the New Willard Monday night, January 8, and the V President and Mrs. Coolidge and the Secretary of State and Mrs. Hughes will attend as guests of honor. This is the charity ball which the President and Mrs. Harding elected to attend, and the night of the ball will also be a night of dinner parties, the guests for the most part going in large parties, which will fill the boxes surrounding the ball- room. And speaking of dancing, reminds one that the much-talked-of and exceedingly smart One Hundred Dance Club has again gone on tae shoals for the season, and this time for the want of homes—odd, indeed— of its members. Senator and Mrs. Gerry, who are members, are house- less this season, except for the home of Mrs. Richard H. Townsend, where they arc passing the season; the home of Mr. and Mrs, Sylvanus Stokes is in an incomplete condition; some members have closed their homes and !gone abroad and others have leased their houses and taken apart- ments. ROMINENT features of the social roster for this week are the McCul- lum-Parker wedding, Tuesday in St. John’s Church; the Congres- sional Club open house tomorrow, from 3 to 6 o’clock. and a_dance in the evening; a dance in the same club, with Representative and Mrs. Funk as hosts, Tuesday night; a birthday anniversayr celebration for the King of | iam, from 5 to 7 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, with the minister of Siam as host; a dance Wednesday night, which Mrs. Edward Beale McLean will give for Miss Beatrice Pitney; the Women’s Overseas Service League Lenefit at the President, the same night; a splendid reception, with danc- ing, preceded by the ceremony of unveiling a bust, in the Pan-American Union, Thursday night, with the minister of Colombia and Senora de Olaya as hosts, and the second Army dance at Rauscher’s, Friday night. There will be important dinner and Tuncheén parties, a few teas and very many small dances filtering through the seven days. = Mrs. K. C.
