When taken into custody and said that he had npt shot to kill to inflict bodily injury upon him. Nathan was at work yesterday aft- ernoon raking the parade ground with Lange as his guard, when, according to the latter, the prisoner attempted to walk away, using vile language and abusing him for no apparent reason. The guard said that Nathan then advanced toward him With a rake in hand, and that he called upon him to halt, firing one shot in the air at the same time. Nathan continued to advance, Lange sa!d, and as he neared him' he fired the’ second shot, killing the prisoner ‘instantly. Lange fn Guarihouse. The /post coroner viewed the body and a board of officers was appointed to investigate the shooting and deter- mine whether Lange should be court- martialed. Lange was confined to the guardhouse to await the findings of the board. The dead soldier was under a gen- eral court-martial sentence of a dis- honorable discharge from the United States Army and eight months’ con- finement at hard labor. He had been at Fort Myer since his capture by the local police on July 12, on a charge of desertion from Camp Meade, Md. He is said to have been about thirty-five years of age, and was formerly a member of Company K, 12th Infantry, at Camp Meade. The records s his nearest kin to be a wife in Nor- folk, Va. If gnashing teeth and rant- ing, and frenzied gallivanting would cure a single ill, I'd say, “Why, then, get busy, and whoop until you're izzy, it’s sinful to be still” When troubles gather round me, attempt- ing to confound me, I do not shed a sigh; I know that by tomorrow my little bunch of sorrow will i For troubles perish early unless we're sore and surly, and make of them our pets; the wise man winks at trouble and a soap-suds bubblé, and slumbers and forgets. Oh, why get mad as hatters, when nothing really matters, when nothing’s here to stay? The gusty wind now rising with energy surprising will blow our griefs away. Here nothing is a fixture, and life’s a queer old mix- ture of sigh and sneeze and smile; the years are onward sweeping, and anything like weeping is never worth our while. The sighing man’s a rabbit, and weeping is a habit that should dfsgrace a loon; and still the briny splatters, though nothing really matters, we go away so soon. (Copyright.) WALT MASON.
