Sunday School Lesson BY REV. HUGH T. STEVENSON. TRUST AND —Luke, 12.1,59. he life is more A _LESSON PREPAREDNES Golden Text: than the food, and mn body than the raiment." " Luke, 12.23. Or the Christmas Lelmn THE BIRTH OF JESUS.—Luke, 2.1.20. Golden Texi ‘There is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” —Luke, 2.11. Christmas recalls to men the great- est event in history. Its carols fil the world with the song of the angels proclaiming the birth of a Savior and of peace to men of good Will There is no more fascinating story in literature than the scriptural narra- tive of the advent of our Lord, when God entered humanity and came to dwell among men. The heavenly choir inspired the humble shepherds to cave their flocks and worship the child, wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in the manger. The wise men found Him and worshipped the babe with -ti uable gifts be- light of the cholarship in he new born King. isions and differ- ences that separate men and nations are largely due to the fact that the authority of the Christ has not been e unrest that mars the moment can be traced ‘o he fact that business men and pub- sts have not allowed the Lord to rula in the affairs of the race. Men think that they are practicable when they refuse to regulate their irs by the teachings of Jesus, who came | Rt only to reveal ach them how they could live in fel- fewship with the Father in heaven #nd thelr brethren on the earth. They had no room for Him in birth and the continua spirit today shuts Christ out of the fairs of men. If peace is ever to be ome reality and a new era inaug- nrated among all peopl nations, then the personal relation of the in- dividual soul to God and His fellow man must be taken into account a the essential factor. Not until men have had the life, love, and longin ot Jesus born in them so are new creations in Him ¢ pect an era of peace. T v war has failed to crad cause it has not destroyed the covet- ousness of men and filled them with go0d will. The soiution of the prob- lems of the modern world awaits the aaceptance of God! The soctal, politi nd industriai questions will be solved when accept Jesus Christ and practice Hi: precepts. Humenit ie fact that, like the have trusted in_riches God. Men have lacke Him. It was while J ing His followers how faith would de stroy fear Kll:\( an unkaown person sought the assistance of the Master in an efforft to force his brothers to divide up the family estate with him. *“Because this man was covetous, he could see in Jesus nothing more than a rabbi who might influence hi brother. Our sense of want largel shapes our conception of Christ. Many today see in Him mainly a social (and economical) reformer. because our notion of what we and the world need most is something to set social conditions rlghl and so secure earthl well being” The Master's answer appears to have been harsh. This was due to the man" onception of the Savior's jon and meihod of deal- & with social, economic and poli cal problems. Jesus did not pose as an authority in political science, eco! nomics or sociology, but He preached a gospel that met man's deepest needs and revolutionized these three sci- ences, all governments, and human relationships. 2 The Lord warned His questioners and those present of the danger of covetousness, when He declined to prostitute His ministry by becoming 2 referee In temporal matters. There is no sin more often spoken against in the Bible than that of covetousness, which prompted the man to seek the Master's help in securing his share of the property left by his father. Christadelphian Chapel Brethren meet every Sunday at 11 a. . at I to men, but to! men } a not jntimate that the service ed of Him was wrong. but He pointed out that His gospel did not deal directly with such problems. It went deeper and sought to reconstruct human character. He introduced the principles that worked out organic changes and that eventually would correct all the abuses and wrongs in society and every realm of human life. He tried to make men understand that their first duty was to make a life. Too many men in their efforts to make a living have forgotten that their first concern should be the mak- ing of a life. Covetousness makes men forget the suprems value of life. It fills them, like the rich fool, with the passion for money. Jesus warned His hearers against the peril of be- ing money mad, The Master sought td a th “de impress upon S sitfulness of His parable of the rich i single word i the teachings of Christ that can be construed as antagonistic to the D session of wealth that is acquired honestly through ability and indv There is something attractive ut the rich man of the parable.
