It is most important to bear In mind their effects in plan- ning the most efficient lighting for the home. Dark walls absorb light and at the same time make rooms appear smaller. Light walls reflect light and increase the ap- parent size of rooms. Scientific experiments made by paint manufacturers have proved that the various shades and tones of color are important factors in reflecting light from the walls and thereby increasing illumination. It is surprising to investigate one of the color charts supplied by manufacturers and to note the difference in the reflective value of paints. For instanc a well painted pure white in flat tone gives 79 per cent reflection, whereas the same wall painted in a bright sage gives 43 per cent reflection. Surpose for instance, in the . paisting of the kitchen there is selected a color known as forest green. The refiective value would only be 21 per cent, whereas if the kitchen were painted in ivory, the “ per cent of reflection would be 72. The difference between these two paints and ttheir light reflec- tion possibilities would not only have a tendency to decrease the apparent size of the rooms, but it might make all the difference in the world in the cheery bright appearance so desirable in Kit- chens. Whereas by the use of dark color there is a possibility that the kitchen work would be done with less speed and more fatigue. It is well to remember that color is a very important factor both from a health and happi- mness point of view. Investigate and study carefully not only the lighting fixtures for the homé but * the various kinds of colors for the walls and their reflective per- centages.
