PROTEST CHANGE INTROLLEY SERVICE Takoma Park Prefers 20- Minute Through Cars to 15- Minute Shuttle System. Discontinuation of through service by the Capital Traction Company to Takoma Park and subs fon of a shuttle scrvice operated between 14th street and Colorado avenue and Ta- koma Park, which has been ordered by the Public Utilities Commission of the District, is protested by the town council of Takoma Park, in a letter submitted to the commission by Mayor James L. Wilmeth. The commission, in directing the Capital Traction Company to substi- tute the shuttle service for the service from the navy yard, stated that “this change should be made as an experiment to determine the rela- tive value of the two methods of op- eration.” The traction company was directed to “discontinue the through service as soon as practicable.” 7,500 Afe Involved. Mayor Wilmeta declared yesterday the new system would be in direct violation of the best interests of about 7,500 residents of Takoma Park. In his letter to the commission Mayor Wilmeth asks that the order be vacated, and the through service continued. 'Tre town council, through Mayor Wilmeth, put forth the follow- Ing reasons for their request: “(1) The present through service is more desirable and more convenient to our citizens. *“(2) The transfer at Colorado avenue is inconvenient and is especlally un- desirable at ali times. but particu- larly in bad weather, also in the heat of the day and at night time when it is more or less unsafe for lady pas- sengers. “(3) We prefer the-through service on a twenty-minute schedule to the huttle service with a transfer on a fifteen-minute schedule. Not Heard by Commission. *“(4) Our citizens were not given the THE SUNDAY STAR, mental to the best interests of Ta- koma Park. Our town is growing very rapidly and our citizens are look- ing for better street car service. We consider your order a backward step. “(6) We have tried the transfer proposition at Colorado avenue be- fore and It was unsatisfactory; it would be unsatisfactory now. Further experiments involving this transfer as contemplated in your order, would be productive of confusion, delay, long waiting, inconvenience and digsatis- faction. “(7) We do not want this change. If it is proposed to enforce the order, we would respectfully ask for a hear- ing on the subject in order that your i commission may know fully the atu- tude of our citizens, and hear their side of the case. We hope, however, that this submission from the town council, which represents public opin- ing on this subject, will be considered sufficient to justify your honorable commission to vacate the saill order and permit the continuation of the present service.
