DECKER. - Special Correspoadence af The Star and Chi- cago Daily News. WARSAW, Poland, May 5.—Events in Upper Silesia call attention once more to that hotbed of trouble. Sev- eral prominent Poles have been as- sussinated, French chasseurs were killed in a booby trap, a German woman standing at a window was shot by French troops of occupation, who thought that & sniper had fired at them from the window, and nu- merous other deeds of violence have been committed. There are signs that the Poles are about to seek revenge for the assassinations, and th man ‘“orgesch” or “organization Escheresch” is moving men and arms to_the trouble area. Poles see a connection betwecen these events in> Upper Silésia, the Genoa conference and the red mobili- zation along the Lithuanian, Polish and Rumanian frontiers. The hope lund belief is that it will not com | | i a renewal of hostilities. But if Upp Silesla_explodes and the soviets a tack Lithuania or Rumania, the I'oles { will not sit idly by. be the ruination of the tion thus far realized i Europe. Already many Ger- man owners have removed their of- fices from Berlin to Kattowitz, now Polish, and have established ageacies in Warsaw. The Germans are pre- tected by the Geneva comvention for }1a period of fifteen years. One advantage of the division is to remove one customs barrier between the region and the east and south. But these markets are stagnant be- cause of bolshevism and industrial retrogression. Polish Upped Silesia also produces large quantities of artificial feetil- izer and minring explosives. e, Upper Silesia produces mainly finished products—rails, steel wire. pipe and structural steel. There are no large car or locometive works in this region. A few finishing plants | operate on the German side, and one large enameling plant on the Tolish n side. For the industry .on the Ger- man side the Germans will be com- pelled for a long time to tmport coal from the Polish side—perhaps 5000,-, 000 tons yearly. Severe Competition From Germany.
