D. C., SEPTEMBER 25, 1921-PART 1. - The Sweeping Success of the Washington Motor Bus Line Everyone Now Acknowledges the Permanency of the Modern Bus----Washington Service to Be Expanded Immediately The highly profitable operation of motor bus lines in the cities threugheout the world has rapidly made the peng; come to the full realization that the modern and properly operated bus system is a transportation factor that is here to stay. . The history and progress of the modern motor bus reads like s commercial romance.’ Starting on a small scale, it has rapidly be- come one of the most important parts of the world’s meang of mu- nicipal transportation. This does not mean that they are going to put the street cars out of business. Far from it.” Street cars are equally as important, Nor must you confuse the modern well-organized motor bus service with the commen “jitney.” The moter bus line is a well-organized, efficiently managed, eco- nomically operated method of transportation that with regularity takes you to and from specific centers at & nominal fare—only 8 cents in Washington! It runs on definite schedule, picking you up at the curb and letting you off at the curb. . Nor does bad weather make any difference. These motor buses operate on continuous and never failing schedule 365 days in the year. In New York everyone takes the bus in preference to other means of transportation. It is convenient, clean, rapid, safe and above all eomfortable. . In New York city buses carry over 40,000,000 passengers annually. Such a record certainly shows every indication af real and very at- tractive profits. In London the Omnibus Company paid, even during the war, over $1,000,000 on its outstanding securities. . “‘The Chicago bus lines are meeting w!th similar success. In Detroit the bus lines are now carrying over 1,000,000 passen- gers & month. So you see that both the service for the publie and the profit shar- ing opportunities for the public is almost without equal. Now we come to Washington—the Nation’s Capital—the people’s city—your own home town. You, too, have a8 wonderful bus line—one of the marked successes of all the great transportation lines in America. Oa the morning of Maxch- 1st, last,-Washington was greeted with Te‘h"brand new motor buses of the latest design made their debut on 16th Street N. W., one of the beautiful residential sections of Washington. Success was immediate! On April 20th four new buses were added to take care of the ever-increasing business. It almost seemed as if all Washington wanted to ride in these splendid new buses. The Washington buses are now rumning on three routes—Eighth and Pepnsylvania avenue, Potomac Park and Haines Point. During the first six months over three quarters of a million pas- _ sengers rode in these buses! So yoy see what an excellent innevation this has been for the City of Washington. 5 Right now we are showing a profit—yet our business has hardly begun. . In the first place most of the time we were in operation was Wash- ington’s deadest period. Think of the tens of thousands who were out of the eity! With such an exceptional showing in the first six months (over 750,000 passengers carried, mind you) backed by the insistanee of the public for more routes to be added, we have decided to install 16 more buses. Ten will-go into operation dyring the next 8 weeks. The balance soon after the first of November. On account of the growing popularity of this splendid meter bus seryice the Federal Utilities Commission has granted us two new franchises which require the installation of these additional buses. First route starting from Eighth and Pennsylvania to TFwelfth Street, to Massachusetis Avenue, to Sixteenth Street N, W., to Har- vard Street, to Thirteenth Street, to Park Road, to New Hampshire Avenue, to Grant Circle and return (Petworth Division). - Second route, starting at Eighth and Pennsylvania Avepue to Twelfth, to Rhode Island Avenue, to North Gapitel Street andfll return. Almost daily we are getting requests for new routes, so you can see the demand for these buses in Washington is enormous. This means that during the next sixth months we should, eon- gervatively carry over 2,000,000 passengers! Can you imagine what that means? Think of the possible profita! Think what the stockholders should get in the way of cash returns! On account of the wide, beautiful Washington streets and magnifi- cent large trees it is impossible to run the double-decked buses. But this is an advantage, for the large double-decked buses have to run on solid tires, whereas our buses can run on pneumatic tires, which means much greater riding comfort to our patrons and more econemy in operation. x The type and design of our buses is the result of a very careful study of the best in modern bus construction, and they have been selected with the chief consideration of comfort and safety. In order to properly put into operation these additional buses and expand the service we have had to increase the capital of the operat- ing company. . We want this company, not only to be known as the people’s line, but we want it to actually be the people’s line—the finest of its kind in the world. That is, we want you to own it and share in the immense profits that are bound to come. This corporation is primarily the people’s line. It gives you pleas- ure, service and accommodation, therefore, why should it not give you profits also? . So instead of getting additional capital by going to some brokerage house and letting them underwrite the stock at a big premium, we are offering it to the public—to yeu—direct, with all these extrava- gant expenses eliminated. This company is capitalized at $500,000.00. The steck is all com- mon—$10 per share—$10 par value. There is no preferred stock—no bonds—no underwriter’s fee to pay. We are offering it direct to the people, for we want every Washing- ton resident to at least own a part of this splendid motor bys line— a line that will be known internationally. Only a limited number of shares will be offered ‘for sgle. Only 17,600 shares will go on the market. After these are dispesed of no more will be offered—no more ean be had. Furthermore, none of this steck can be purchased before October 8d. On that day the books will be epened and subseriptions taken. Remember, only $10 a share to own an interest in what will un- doubtedly be one of the most profitable bus lines in the world. And to make it easier for you, you don’t have to pay for the stoek all at one time. All that is necessary is a small initial down payment. Remember, no stock until October 3d. But get your order in now. Stock will be alloted as the subscriptions come in, If the demand ex- ceeds {;hfi supply the stock will be pro rated accordingly to the amount you wish. Undoubtedly the entire issue will go in a dgy. In fact, several peo- ple we hgve spoken to wish to take the entire issue, but that is not what we want. i We want the residents of Washington to share in the profits of the ine, We would rather have ten to twenty thousand small steckhelders than ten or twenty large ones. iy So this is your opportunity. New Yorkers had it and are making money. So did Londeners. So did Detroiters. Now this is Washing- ton’s chanee. E That the personnel and management of this company is of the right character and caliber is fully evidenced by the fact that the Federal Utilities Commission have on every occasion granted the Directors of the Washington Rapid Transit Company without question these yalu- able operating franchises.
