Will Mean Huge Saving to Coast and Geodetic Survey. Saving of more than a million dollars for vessels for the coast and geodetic survey has been effected through the transfer from the Navy Department to this bureau of two mine planters now at the Portsmouth, N. H., navy yard. The vessels have just been turned over to the coast survey, and when provided with the surveying equipment will be placed in com- mission and sent to Alaska. This will take about three wecks. They will be rechristened. but the names have not yet been determined upon. The transfer was brought about through the budget bureau, after the survey officials had made repeated but ineffective efforts to have suc a transfer made direct with the \an Depertment and beforc the budget bureau was formed. The survey of- ficials had included an estimate of $1,000,000 for the construction of new vessels, but following the action of the budget bureau has stricken this amount from the request for funds for the next fiscal year. ‘WOULD GRANT DIPLOMAS.
