C. : WATERS DURING YEI\I"(| Harbor Police and Others See Need of Pulmotors at Points Along River Front. - Members of the harbor police force and other persons engaged in activi- | ties along the water front are unani- mously in favor of establishing more ! adequate means to conserve human | life in cases of persons falling over- board, jumping into the river or| being In danger of drowning from other causes. | Capt. W. T. Reynolds, in the boat- | ing business at the foot of 34th street, long advocated the placing of pulmotors at convenlent points along the river. Failing to find any agency to purchase the pulmotors, he made ! a purchase and has the instrument ! where it may be had without delay | and without cost. | ‘During the many years Capt. Rey- nolds has been on the river front he has saved a number of persons from drowning and probably has recov- ered the bodies of more victims of drowning accidents than any other individual. Twenty-eight persons were drowned in District waters the last fiscal year, while the previous year such deaths ! numbered thirty-seven. Since Jan- | uary 1, according to the coroner's | records, thirteen persons have been | drowned; five during. the first six months of the year and eight since July 1. Included in the list of drowning accidents this month were those of two children, Myer and Louis Kolker, who lost their lives when washed into an unprotected sewer in Sol- diers’ Home grounds. There was one ity in the tidal basin, C. E. Shi connected with the Southern rallway, being drowned while bath- ing. Raymond Gray, Raymond White, Clarence Carroll, Howard Ross and Albert E. Smith, all colored, were the other victims of drowning accidents this month. Records show that each drowning was accidental. DEFENDS SITE CHOSEN FOR NEW HIGH SCHOOL Head of Northeast Citizens’ Asso- clation Says It Is High and Overlooks River. | ‘The site of the new Eastern Hl[hl Bchool, which is bounded by 17th and 19th and East Capital and B streets northeast, criticised by several mem- | bers of Congress, who declared it to| be adjacent to a swamp, was defended last night by Evan H. Tucker, presi- dent of the Northeast Washington Citizens’ Association, and Dr. Starr Parsons, chairman of the committee on colleges and schools of the organ- ization. “The site,” said Dr. Parsons, “is high and overlooks the Anacostia river and is now free from marshes. It is on the border of what will bs a ‘beautiful park comparable with Poto- ac Park.” He pointed out that the site was really selected by Congress d aproved by the Northeast Wash- ington Citizens’ Assoclation, the board of education and the Commissioners. Dr. Parsons said that the Northeast Washington Citizens’ Association started the agitation for the new ‘Bastern High School, which is now | under construction, and which is ex- pected to be completed by September, 1933. “In 1908 the committee on schools of the assoclation, of which ¥ was chairman, presented a report! recommending a new high school | building. The report recommended that a site bounded by 6th and 7th and D and E streets northeast be acquired for the building. The school board approved the recommendation and provided in its estimates an ap- propriation of $7,500 for the purchase of t;nt square, which was then vacant land. “Congress failed to act on the mat-| ter and the land was sold and built upon. However. the association con- tinued its agitation for the new school, ' and by the persistent efforts of the committee on legislation an appro- priation of $150,000 was granted by Congress in 1914 for a site.” —_— OPPOSES SANITARY LAW. Newton A. James, Candidate for, Legislature, Speaks at Hyattsville. | At East Hyattsville last Friday. night there was a well attended political meeting given by the East Hyattsville Association to further the! nomination and election of Newton A. James, republican, to the house of, delegates. Mr. James spoke and at- tacked the sanitary law as it now stands, stating that the present law - gives too much discretion to the sani- tary commissioners and that this dis- cretionary power was being used to the detriment of the people. Richard A. Pyles, republican, candi- date for the state senate, also spoke and attacked the present sanitary law and its operation. In the near future State Senator Oliver Metzerott will speak to the East Hyattsville Association on the sanitary law. —_—_— NEW MEDICINE BUILDING. Dr. Willia mH.
