>3 N p/-’l' Lovisa FARRAND Dussians Headdress. “ARRYS - Ewrn— White House Lawn Parties| Hope of Society Because Of Executive Hospitality Entertaining by President and Mrs. Harding on Mayflower During Hampton Roads Trip Prel- ude to Anticipated Future Events. BY SALLIE V (0 MELANGE of interesting social affairs filled the last week of| A April. running the entire gamut of entertainment from staid | and stately dinner parties for the Vice President and Mrs. Coolidge, the Secretary of State and Mrs. Hughes and for the | foreign visitors, Prince Albert I of Monaco and the Venezuelan mis- sion, to luncheons, teas, dances and weddings. A NICE glimpse of coming events was given in the Mayflon'er's trip to Hampton roads when the President and Mrs. Harding were accompanied by a party of congenial friends, and one is convinced that .. PR only warmer and more settled weather is needed to assure a series of r garden parties on the White House lawn. After all, perhaps the garden parties will give a better and broader glimpse of social life in America than could any other entertainment, as they will necessarily be large affairs—a handful of guests counting perhaps a hundred making really | no show at all on the broad acres of the south front grounds. Pose for Many Pictures. i 'HE President and Mrs. Harding have posed in more group pictures | in the short time they have been in the White House than have all | the other Presidents and First Ladies put together, in the same length | of time, and most interesting was the picture of Mrs. Harding with the | Girl Scouts. She will be the guest of honor at their rally Saturday at ! Continental Hall, when she will be presented with a “tenderfoot” pin. Gen. Pershing will present the prizes to the Girl Scouts, and another interesting feature will be when Mrs. Larz Anderson presents Mrs. Benedict Crowell with the Edith Cavell medal. '‘HE Vice President and Mrs. Coolidge, who have been much sought | for guests, will be entertained Tuesday night by the Speaker and Mrs. Gillett at a reception and ball in_the New Willard, which will com- | bine in the company official. diplomatic and smart society. The Speaker | and Mrs. Gillett are also expected to figure soon in another interesting affair, when the marriage of Miss Frances Hoar, the elder daughter of Mrs. Gillette, to Mr. Reginald Foster of Boston takes place. Both Miss Hoar and her sister, Miss Louise Hoar, are in Boston. where Mr. Foster has been with his family since arriving from Europe a week ago. Polo Ball Tomorrow Night. THE polo ball tomorrow night should be an cxceedingly sprightly | affair, for it brings into social life an entirely new feature and one in which Washington in general is interested. Polo has given society a new diversion and now, instead of simply driving about the winding roads of Potomac Park. one may ride or motor down on practice days and watch the thrilling game from start to finish. Last week the President and Mrs. Harding, the former President and Mrs. Wilson and the Secre- of War were all onlookers during a singie afternoon. The ball tomorrow night at the New Willard at 10 o'clock is under the auspices of the War Department Polo Association and the sales of boxes and tickets to fashionable folk and sport lovers will go for equip- ment, as it is an expensive pastime for small-salaried officers to support. Maj. Quakemeyer is the head and front of the polo movement in Wash- ington. ANY smart folk will come to Washington from New York, Boston and Philadelphia for the annual National Capital Horse Show which opens May 12 and lasts through the 17th. Mr. William Corcoran Bustis is president and Mr. Melvin C. Hazen vice president of the as. sociation, with Commissioner Cuno H. Rudolph, treasurer; Mr. Horace H. Westcott, secretary, and for vice presidengs, Mr. Larz Anderson, Gen. James A. Buchanan, Mr. William Phelps Eno, Mr. Edward Beale McLean, Gen. John J. Pershing, Col. Robert M. Thompson, Maj.
