Just now it is carpets, and, as was the case a fortnight ago with hosiery, retailers them- selves are having a voice in the matter by active patticipation in the auction at which the Alexan- der Smith & Sons Carpet Company is disposing of a stock that is large enough and comprehensive enough to bé an adtual factor in the trade. The first, day of the sale saw prices shaded from one-quarter to one-third from the spring list is- sued last November. Yesterday saw the average reduction in- creased to 35 per cent.
