Elwell, New York sportsman and card expert. has puzzied the Buffalo and New York police for two days, had a first degree murder charge placed against' him for four hours tonight. Tre charge was placed opposite his name on the police blotter of the Niagara street station at 6 o'clock. J, April 9.—"Scan- dal,” developing from the theft of some hotel linen, from which she had been cleared. was given today by Mrs. Fannie Miller as the reason she and her aunt, Miss Carrle Sunderland, closeted themsclves in a hotel room three years ago and romained in se- clusion there until yesterday, when they were ordered removed by health officials. The theft occurred in a New York hotel, and after the exoneration the two women came here. Mrs. Miller said they voluntarily kept to them- selves for one vear, and that during the last two years one or the other had been sick and they had taken turns nursing each other. Miss Sun- derland is in a hospital, in a serious condition. She is suffering from tu- berculosis. Claimn Wealthy Relatives. Although reluctant to give details of her life, Mrs. Miller, who said her maiden name was McClum. told offi- cials today that she was the grand- daughter of a wealthy Topeka. Kan. RAIL HEARING ADJOURNS. New York Central Plea for Belt Lines Opposed. CHICAGO. April 9.—The hearing before an interstate commerce com- missioner here on the request of the New York Central Railroad for per- mission to buy or lease two Chicago belt lines, was adjourned to-day until further notice by the commissioner. The hearing during the last two days has been confined to testimony of representatives of eight railroads who are opposed to the purchase by the New York Central of the proper- ties.
