Radium as sbid is never pure, but is a mixture of a radium salt—usually the sulphate—with ba- rium sulphate, and sometimes a trace of mesothorium. The labor of sepa- rating the barium from the radium completely is so great that perhaps only a few chemists in the world have ever seen pure radium salts. Mme. Curle herself having been the first to prepare the pure product. It is. therefore, impossible to weigh out exact amounts of radium salts, but, inasmuch as the contaminating sub- stance does not in any way aiter the radium for experimental use, or in the treatment of cancer, the presence of a small amount of impurity does no harm. Tented by Light. but the illuminating ‘gas of the city of New York Is officially tested by the amount of light which it gives in comparison with a standard can- dle, no attention being naid to the chemical composition of the gas. So radium is measured by the light which it gives, the standard aed being a known quantity of radium. The first of these known quantities standards at Washington and the standard meter at the bureau in Paris.
