Governor Speak—Other Political and Municipal News. £pecial Dispateh to The Star. RICHMOND, Va., April 2—During the week this city has witnessed the presence of men from every section of the state to attend thc conference with the budget commission and to appear before the conmittes en- gaged in redistricting the state for members of the legislature. Many of these visitors did not hesitato to dis- cuss the gubernatorial campaign, and, while there is a lack of interest in many sections, the vast majority of the counties and cities report that | there is growing interest. That the sentiment is growing for Senator Trinkle is admitted generally. and while there are supporters of Mr. Tucker who declare their belief in his sucoess in the primary. the pre- ponderance of expression favors Sen- ator Trinkle to win. These estimates say that he will carry certainly six of the ten districts, with excellent chanoes for the seventh. The two candidates met at Houston, Halifax county. Monday and made spceches from the same platform and largely to the same crowd. There was a very large attendance of farmers from every part of the coun- ty. and while the couniy Has been claimed by both, a club was or- ganized there in behalf of Mr Trin- kle. and the membership said to have boen enrolled was 500, and steps were taken to organize each of the pre- cinots forthwith. Senator Trinkle spoke for about an hour, Mr. Tucker following in an address of fifteen minutes, See Representative Slemp. Representative C. Bascom Slemp of the Ninth gistrict, member of the national republican committee, was in Richmond this week on private business. He transacted his business and then had time enough left to meet a few of his political friends for a chat regarding the new administra- tion. The republicans are awaiting the declaration of policy regarding the filling of many places, and they are engaged ' in getting together. Mr. Slemp has the call in the matter of recommendations, whenever they are. called for, and the friends who met him here and talked and lunched with him are on the committees which will do the recommending. One of the best known members of the party said there were half a dozen men seeking every place to be filled. apd that choice would be based on efficiency, regularity and loyalty, . » . s Baker Heirs Organize.’ - A meeting of the heirs. of . Jacob Baker, late of Philadelphis, has been! held here and officers elected to prose- cute the claims for a large tract of land which is now worth about $100,~ 000,000, said to be near the heart of the' city of Philadelphia. The allega- tions are that Jacob Baker went ftom this state many years ago. thdt he acquired a tract of land then near the city of- Philadelphiz, and that shortly before his death leased the property for ninenty-nine years. Heirs of Jacob Baker in this city then began an agitation of the matter. Local law- yers are investigating the case and the belief is that a suit will be begun to recover the property and to dis- tribute it among the heirs. ‘Women for Legislature. Miss U. Belle Perkins and Mrs. James W. Durham of this city are already in the race for the legisla- | ture, being candidates in the demo- cratic primary to be held in. Invite the President. Acca Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, has appointed a committee close of the reunion. At this time! there will be a class of perhaps 250 | men for the degrecs of the Shrine. | Postmaster General Hays will be here one week from today, when the} formal dedication of the new Scot- tish Rite Temple will take place. The | le is one of the show places The committee which is trying to solve the matter of redistricting the state | for members of the general assembly s having trouble, and the trouBle is increasing. .To begin with. there is objection to having the| county of Warren placed in the sena- torial district with Winchester. Rap- pahannock county objects to being associated with Rockingham. which has a habit of electing a republican at intervals. There was objection to having Amherst and Nelson counties combined with Appomattox and Buckingham, as the change would glve the first two counties entire domination of the district. The fact is that all of the objections were made by democrats, not a republican appearing to suggest a change. One of the plans suggested would result in the city of Roanoke having two scnators, with Franklin county added to give the population. Opposition to Bonds. While the state stands for and needs good roads, and the people last year voted to amend the constitution so as -to allow the ptate to issye bonds for highway purposes, there appears to be growing opposition to the scheme on the ground that the issuance of bonds means an increase in taxation, and the people are already “protest- ing against the increase of last year and the increase in property valuations. Shopmen Resume Work. Chesapeake and Ohio shopmen. who have been idle for two weeks, re- turned to duty today about 600 strong. The men were displaced in three shifts, according to service in the shops, the oldest men being last laid off and the first to resume. It is be- lieved that others will be taken on soon, thus relieving the situation here and reducing the number of idle men. Building has suddenly taken a- boom in Richmond, and ~there is more construction now than for a year. —_— Under the constitutjon of the new !
