Colt, tan and Al sizes, 21y Tt WAR DEPARTMENT AIDS HIGHWAY PLAN {Authorizes Building Part of i New Road, Clarendon, Va., to Washington. A new highway in Arlington coun- ty. from Clarendon to Washington via !the Highway bridge, for which the Arlington County Chamber of Com- merce, with the aid of Representa- tive R. Walton Moore of the eighth Virginia district, of which Arlington | county is a part, has been working i for the past several months, is soon to materialize, according to an_an- [ nouncement made yesterday by Frank Lyon, president of the chamber. i _Mr. Lyon is in receipt of a letter from Mr. Moore, stating that the ! Secretary of War has authorized the | construction of that part of the road that {s proposed to run through the Fort Myer reservation from Hatfield to the south wall of the Arlington | cemetery. This action of the War Department, Mr. Lyon declares, will make the highway a certainty, as there is | already in existence a good road along the south wall of the cemetery connecting with the splendid high- way through the agricultural grounds to the south end of the Highway | bridge. Reaponsibility on County. The west end of the proposed high- way, which runs from Hatfield to Clarendon, where the new highway will join other good roads leading to Ballston, Falls Church, nna and Fairfax put in order. is up to the county tc Substantiaily, Mr. Lyon said, all of this part of the proposed highway, While unimproved, is now open to travel, land in Clarendon and Lyon Park and along the Washington and Virginia rallway having already been dedicated by property owners and adopted by the board of supervisors. A limited length of land is yet to be acquired by condemnation, but no trouble is anticipated from this quar- ter, Mr. Lyon stated. Speaking of the advantages of the proposed project, Mr. Lyon declared that the connecting link across the government reservation will open what is destined to become the most important and most used highway from Washington into Arlington county, equally beneficial to both places. Avolds Trafic Congestion. “By its use,” Mr. Lyon stated, “all of the congestion which exists from the Washington end of the Key bride to Center market and tne Capitol will be avoided. And another thing that will make the new route to Washington more desirable is the fact that the distance from Claren- don to the heart of the business dis- trict of Washington will be shorter and in the matter of time will prove vastly shorter because of the lack of congestion referred to. Taking Center market as his_ ob- hctive point, Mr. Lyon stated that the istance there from Clarendon Is about five miles via the proposed route and traveling by automobile. he said, at the rate of twenty miles per hour, the market could be reached in fifteen minutes and the Treasury De. partment 'in about ten to twelve minutes. To both the people of Washington and the county the opening of this road is equivalent to moving Ballston and Clarendon and many othez places in_the northern part of the county a mile nearer to the center of the city, Mr. Lyon declared. | Benefit Goverament. Mr. Lyon said that the project will be of immeasurable advantage to the Government at Fort Myer. ° ¥At the present time,” he continued, hall the heavy hauling to that im- portant military reservation has to be made through Georgetows and via the Key Bridge route. With this.road existence all materials from the ffeight depots of the Pennsylvania and Baltimore and Ohio railroads in southwest Washington may be hauled direct over the Highway bridge to the reservation, without passing either through the cemetery or through. Fort Myer proper.” ' MANASSAS. MANASBAS, Va, March 26 (Spe- clal).—The board of supervisors, at its monthly meeting here Tuesday, {decided to divide the revenue de- rived from the dog tax among the jrespective districts of the county in proportion to the amounts derived therefrom. The damages to be paid out of these funds will first be paid in the-district in which the property belongs or is assessed.
