DISCUSS WHALE WITH LEG Lecture Turns to Female Caught .in British Columbia. At a recent lectare held at the Amer- fcan Museum of Natural History the first whale with hind legs was the sub- Ject of an interesting scientific discus- sion. The whale was caught in British Columbia. The legs project some four feet from the body near the tail, and are about six inches broad, the bones being covered with a thick layer of blubber, which may or may not have contained muscle. The whale, - a* female, fifty feet in length, was unfortunately not preserved at the Victoria whaling station, where it was brought in, and one of the legs ‘was broken off by those making the capture. Romance When T was young I looked on Grace as being an enchanting maid; she had a sweet and win- ning face. her hair was of an auburn shade, and when through town she deigned to chase she made the other damsels fade. I asked her if she would be mine; but I was then an awkward clown, and other suitors stood in line, and some had wealth, and some renown; and through- ‘long months I shed the brine be- cause that maiden turned me down. All kinds of years have flown since then, and kings have tumbled, with their crowns, and little boys are now old men, and little glrls are ancient crones, Grace, and we exchanged some startled stares; she’s holding an official place, and meddles i in the state’s affairs; and like a meat- ax is her face, and on her chin are long gray hairs. And doubt- less when-she saw me stand, so fat and lame, an ancient skate, she thought her luck was simply grand, that she had dodged the married state, that my proposals she had canned, and shooed me from her garden gate. And she is glad, and I am glad, that youthful dreams and hopes are dead; for in our youth we all are ‘|and I sit smoking in my den, and thank the gods in fervent tones. ‘ Today I met the dream girl, mad, and all our stars are burn-} ing red; and I. adjust my ]l\fl"' pad. and take nine pills, and to bed.
