Under these conflicting impulses. the stock market moved with irregularity ma considerable uncertainty as to "hl( was the prevailing tendency. 1t did appear. however, taking the greater part of the list, that more resistance was being offercd _to pr fessional efforts on the N.‘IHH' 8il th»n had been the case last week. Here d there individual stocks were driven down. among them Crucible Steel, Atlantic Gulf. Baldwin Logcomottve and Virginia Chemical. But the weakness in these and one or two other shares failed to unsettle “similar i the rest of the market., as driving had done previously. 1t looked as if under cover of the fall in these epecialties short con- tracts were being quietly taken in other directions. But these repurchases were not at all urgent and refused to follow prices up. Rather More Bullish. There is an increasing tendency on the part of the Wall street letter writers to regard the present period in the market as one of accumu- lation. More than one such critic hes adopted this position after hav- ing been consistently bearish for some time past. It is pointed out that bear raiding, while it is punching holes here and there in individual stocks, is not bringing about any such general wéakness as prevailed three months ago. The view is expressed that the mar- ket is in the reverse position from what it i8 in the final stages of a great bull movement. Then indi- vidual stocks continue to be pushed ahead to form a screen for profit- taking in the rest of the list. A large section of the market has either stopped going up or if it goes up a little in sympathy with the bull manipulation of specialties promptly comes down again. The reverse of this situation would it is claimed, be a fairly exact picture of what is happening now. Bear op- erations are succeeding in uncovering weak spots, as, for instance, Crucible Steel, today. But these indlvidual downward plunges no longer find the general list as susceptible as it was. Where the general run of prices goes down there is a quick recovery as soon as the pressure is lifted from the weak things. This is the sort of process which has been going on for the last fortnight or o in quite a por- tion of the industrial group. —_— OIL STOCKS, Quotations foraished by W. 1. Libbs & Ce. a [ n Oil Co. In the caption to the communication printed in Sunday's issue from Judge Felix Cordova Davila, the resident commissioner from Porto Rico, The Star used the words “Denies Porto Rico Seeks Autonomy.” It should be explained that the element in “Porto Rico which entertains the view of the resident commissioner realizes that the independence movement is an iridescent dream and will not work for the good of Porto Rico, but it fa- vors full self-government, the elec- tion of the governor and, pending such change, it favors the appoint- ment of a man indorsed by the island as governor. $5,000 Life Policy, $57.35 Saturday's average: top, 11.50 early; bulk of 200 pounds down, 11.10a11.40; bulk of 220 pounds up, 11.00a11.
