- GROCK IS INDICTED INSHODTIG EASE « !' Assault to kill former Senator Charles B. Henderson of Nevada is charged in an indictment returned to- day by the grand jury against Charles Augustus Grock of Takoma Park, sixty-five years old. Grock shot the former senator at the Senate of- fice building March 5, as the result of a grievance dating back twenty years, it is stated. The bullet plerced the right arm of Mr. Henderson. Grock was arrested, but later was released on $5,000 bail. He was again + ‘taken into custody on a complaint of the sanitary officer as to his mental condition. Hs is now being detained for mental investigation. R Grock called at Mr. Henderson's of- fice in the Senate office building and ‘was asked to return later. He start- ed to leave. but re-entered the office and as Mr. Henderson started to meet him shot him. The maximum penalty for an assault to kill is a term of fifteen years in the penitentiary. SN Edward Brown, colored, was indict- ed for murder in the second degree in connection with the death of Neddon H. Peyton, also colored. November 28 last. The shooting occurred near * & Washington Circle and is said to have been the result of a jealous quarrel. The larceny of 1.000 packages of cigarettes is alleged in an indictment reported against Walwer Henry, a former employe of the Washington Tobacco Company. from which the goods were taken. Others indicted and the charges against them ar, Harry Johnsgon, robbery: George Breneman, forgery: Owinska Del wright. forgery: ard, forgery: John Howry and R. C. Binsan, false pretenses: James How- ard, housebreaking: John F. O'Don- nell, seduction; Charlie Smith, assault to rape. and James F. Williams, as- sault with dangerous weapon. The grand jurors ignored a charge of homicide against Valentine Cudor. who was accused of complicity in the killing of Harry Parker February t. - WOUDPATTAY | AEAD UFTARF ‘Enactment of internal revenue tax legislation ahead of tariff revision was advocated in a statement today by Senator Watson, Indiana. a repub- lican member of the finance commit- tee. He also declared for repeal of the excess profit taxes and the higher surtaxes and substitution of “a mod- erate sales tax.” A budget law and arrangements for payment by the allies of a definite amount of their debt each vear also ' were advocated by the senator. “The business world expects imme- diate relief from the great burden of taxation now imposed upon it said Senator Watson, “and it is the first duty of the republican party to meet this expectation.” Senator Watson faid it was unwise to attempt to pass a temporary tariff measure based on the Payne- Aldrich _or the Dingley or the Mc- Kinley law. ‘“None of them is ap- . plicable to the existing situation,” he said, “and to attempt to make any one of them so would be to enter upon the enactment of a com- plete tariff law on the floor of the Senate, practically without previous consideration by any committee. “We should settle the question of taxation first and determine as nearly a8 possible the amount of revenue “to be thus derived and then we can determine precisely how much we jmust raise by impost taxes in order to meet the expenses of the government. “Nothing is more disturbing to busi. ness than tariff legislation, and it would not be possible for us to pass @ temporary measure and a perma- nent measure under nine months, and during this period the financial and E:lll\ulr'\ll interests of the country ouid continue to be disturbed and istressed. whereas they are entitled to a period of repose and to some- thing Nke certainty in legislation and governmental policies.” —_— 24-O0UNCE BREAD LOAF ADVOCATED BY BAKERS Superintendent of Weignts and Measures to Join With Them in Request to Congress. manufacture a! This . however, would not per- mit the baking of a pound-and-a-half loaf. George M. Roberts, superintendent of weights and measures. stated to- day that a committee of bakers con- ferred with him a few days ago and made known the desire of the bakeries to sell a pound-and-a-haif loaf. Mr. Roberts told the bakers he saw no objection to a loaf of that size and . agreed to go with them in obtaining an amendment to the bill making that possible. Such an amendment, Mr. Roberts said, would not take away from the real purpose of the law, which is to provide standard sizes for loaves. thereby preventing the baking of twelve-ounce, fourteen- ounce or any other odd sized loaves. | The superintendent said he interds to take steps before the ninety days expire to acquaint all grocers and market dealers with the provisions of the law relating to the sale of g0o0ds by weight and measure.
