Convicted for Child Labor. BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Failing to pay fines ranging from $10 to $20 assessed against them on conviction of viola- tion of the state child labor statutes today, a number of Birmingham busi- ness men were given sentences of two hours each. They were not sent to jail, but were held in the courtroom until their sentences expired. Liquor Pumped From Tree. PITTSBURG, Kan—A sherifl’s liquor raiding party found a piece of wood plugged into a hole in a big hedge tree at a coal camp north of Pittsburg. When the plug was pulled out a tube was disclosed. Following the tube the raiders discovered that it connected with an_eight-gallon casket of moon- shine whisky, concealed nearby. The fluid was pumped out through the tree Then a customer appeared. the sheriff Corporal Receives Croas. COLUMBUS, G Corp. J. W. Collier, Company H, 29th Infantry, was awarded the distinguished service cross at Camp Benning by Brig. Gen. W. H. Gordon, commandant of the infantry school. The award was made following a citation for bravery made when Corp. Collier was ordered to advance into the enemy's line and locate artillery fire. He accom- plished his errand. but was wounded in the left thigh by three machine gun bul- ets. Robbed of $4,000 Coat. NEW YORK.—Mrs. Frank L. Tabot. wife of a theatrical producer, was rob- bed of a Russian sable coat valued at $4,000 when two men entered a_taxicab in which she was riding, forced her to remove the garment, and escaped James Fox, the chauffeur, was arrested, charged with being an accomplice. BALTIMORE.—The strength of the 7th Division Camp Meade has been increased by 2,000 men, who have ar- | rived at the camp during the last ten days as a result of the recruiting cam- paign for the 7th Division which was started January 24 to practically all states east of the Mississippi river.
