i ‘i Credit. i — ‘This year will bring unsettled #imes, because of readjusting; the merchant princes need their dimes, and they’ll be slow at trusting. They’il not give credit Jeft and right, as lately they’ve been doing, and frowns will|g greet the slow-pay wight who'd buy a plug of chewing. And (&) many men this year, I gtess, will need a slice of credit, for readjustment brings distress— the banking sharps have said it. Now he who's kept his stand-off bright will know the easy sled- ding, and merchant princes will delight to sell him books or bed- ding. However stringent money phiz the merchants all are yearning. And if he asks to buy on time a grindstone or a ham- mer, the dealers on his person climb, with glad, exultant clamor. There’ll never be a time “so tight that men of reputation for having always acted right (@ A can’t get accommodation. reputation as good pay is better [ far than rubies, and men who do not think that way must travel with the boobies.” The melan- choly days are here, suspended “tick” will daunt them ; and bills . they should have paid last year will rise like ghosts and haunt them. WALT MASON. Copsright by George Matthew Adams. 1,677 SHIPS CONTROLLED BY THE SHIPPING BOARD Merchant Craft as $10,851,000 Deadweight Tons. The Shipping Board controls today 1,677 merchant craft, aggregating 10,851,000 deadweight . tons and_in- cluding 1,388 steel steamers, Capt. Paul Foley, . director of operations, yesterday told the House investigaung committee. Of the steel ships 978 are in active service, 785 to foreign ports, 131 temporarily inactive and 251 tied up. All but ten of board’s 282 wooden craft also are tied up. Capt. Foley said. Alonzo Tweedale, general controller of the Shipping Board, was on the stand during the first hours yesterday under cross-examination by members of the committee regarding his testi- mony given yesterday. The questions merely sought odds and ends of in- formation on which the committee desired to make the record complete and clear. Mr. Tweedale was asked to | put into the record many documents and letters confirming his testimony that the Shipping Board now has an |y efficient audit system which was lack- ing up to the time that he took charge. ‘When Mr. Tweedale had finished his testimony the members of the com- mittee paid him a marked comnli- ment. They arose and shook hands with him and thanked him for the g helpful way in which he had xlveni testimony on the poirnts on which theyl sought enlightenment.
