Homer, contralto, and her daughter, Louise Homer, soprano, gave a joift recital yesterday afternoon in Poli'sTheater before a capacity audi- ence, filing the auditorium and two- thirde of the Mrs. Homer opegied the program with the aria, “Del Mio Core,” from Haydn's “Orfeo,” and Schubert's “Serenade. Then Miss Homer sang Handel's Sleep, Why Dost Thou Leave Me?" followed by four short Tuscan folk songs, ar- ranged for two voices by Cariccioli. The voices blended beautifully. Miss Homer, who seemed nervous in the first part of the program, gained in freedom in each number. She has improved very much since her first appearance here about a year 'ago. To promote better trade relations between the storekeepers of southern and the wholesalers and manufacturers of Washington, a party of local business men, under the aus- pices of the Merchants' and Manu- facturers’ Association, will make a two-day tour, February 23 and 24, of localities in southern Maryland. The trip will be for business only, .| it is stated, and no amusement has been provided for the occasion. The local business houses participating in the trip will entertain the merchants of southern Maryland at four distinct points at luncheon and dinner, accord- ing to plans mapped out. The trip will be made in touring cars, and the party will be en route two days and one night. Marks, president of the National Press Club, will be in charge of the program. ARMY TO USE SURPLUS STOCKS FOR A WHILE Policy Necessitated by Urgency of Cutting Expenses to the Minimum. Surplus stocks of canned goods and reclaimed uniforms held by the War Department are to be used in the maintenance of the Regular Army, under retrenchment orders issued by Secretary Baker. War Department officials say, however, it was not the in- tention of making this use of such things a permanent policy. The $ole purpose, it was nlla. to use up the goods accymulate ing and after the war es a means of reducing mainténance costs to meet present requirements for decreased expenses. Officials declared that it was not the purpose to apply economy measures in such a manner as would result in lowered efficiency, and that fresh meats and other fresh products would continue to be a part of the soldiers’ daily rations. Reclajmed uniforms gre held in large quantities and these will be used for some time, it was stated, but none will be issued unless inspectors have declared them in igood condi- tion.
