HIS VIEWS OF WASHINGTON . President and Mrs. McKinley entertained last night at a state dinner complimentary to Prince Albert of Belgium, and added to the sucial history of the Executive Man- sion an occasion brilliant in itself and full of deepest interest at the present moment. Inedequate as the mansion is for purposes of large entertainments, it is probably in better condition just now, so far as its freshness and daintiness are concerned, than for many years. Flowers liberally adorned each of the parlors, made great masses of fragrant bloom in the east room, and helped out the suggestion of spring- like luxuriance with which the air is laden just now. ‘The table was spread in the cor- ridor, and seventy-two covers were placed. ‘The great expanse of linen was broken by ovals, circles and tail bouquets of maiden- hair fern, studded with either pink or white orchids, Mme. Chatenet roses and be- goria blossums. Pink shades capped the tapers, and a service of china, bordered in red, was on the table. Pink orchid bou- queis were at the ladies’ places. President and Mrs. McKinley received their guests in the east room. Col. Bing- ham, Lieut. Gilmore and Capt. McCawley, in full dress uniform, were present, and in- troduced the guests to the President, his wife end the prince. The Distinguished Party. When dinner was announced Mrs. Mc- Kirley was escoried by the prince, who sat at her right at table. Miss Alger was seaied at the right of the prince. ‘Th2 presence of a umber of young Madies was, it is needless to say, a great pieasure to the royal guest, who is chatty and agreeane. nis appreciation of the French ccoking at the White House and tn2 special American deiicacies in the menu, such as terrapin, was ail that could be desired. The Marine Band played throughout the dinner in th2 conservatory, and at 10 o'clock, when the guests arose fri table, there was mor? music in the eas: room, Mr. Leo Stern, ‘cellist, and Mr. Luckstone of New York being the p2rformers, In ad- dition to the dinner guests, there were present such of the cabinet ladies who were not at th> dinner, Justice and Mrs. McKenna, Dr. and Mrs. Leoaard Wood, Miss Grace Condit-Smith and Lieut. Affairs of Interest Discussed by Mem- bers of the Association. The Brightwood Avenue Citizens’ Asso- ciation held a meeting last night in the hall of Brightwood Hotel and discussed fully the question of highway extension in the District, among other very timely and important local questions. Those taking active part in the discussions of the even- ing were President W. V. Cox, Secretary E. T. Bates, Captain T. -W. Lay, Dr. C. G. Stone,’ Messrs. L. P. Shoemaker, J. H. ways and parks. The latter report was dis- cussed at length by Mr. L. P. Shoemaker, President Cox and Dr. Stone, who thought that unless a proposition.had been offered by elther the Commissioners or the board of trade relative to acceding to amendments asked by the county the suburban associa- tions should work for unconditional repeal of the highway act, which sentiment seem- ed to be approved by other members. Captain T. W. Lay, chairman of the com- mittee on raflroads, stated that he thought within a very short time the Brightwood cars would run down into the center of the city or a satisfactory transfer -system would be established between the Metro- the division of certain property belonging to the estate of’ the Iate-Henry Dainger- field, sr., of Alexardria, Va. The suit is brought by thé widows and children of Reverdy J. Daingerfield and Henry Dain- Gerfield, jr., respectively, sons of the late Henry Daingerfi2laé, whose widow ‘tied in Alexandria a tew weeks ago, and is against Miss Elen C. Daingerfield, sister-in-law of the late John 8. Barbour, once member of the United States Senate from the state of Virginia. Amazed at the Troopers’ Skill. Shortly after breakfast this morning Prince Albert, accompanied by his aids- de-camp and the Belgian minister, drove over to Fort Myer, where a special drill of the cavalry was given at 10 o'clock. The prince wa tounded at the remarkable feats of horsemanship performed by Uncle Sam's troopers, and was even more amazed when he was ‘assured that all the other cavalrymen in the United States army were capable of doing the same things, and that their horses were equally as well trained. At the conclusion of the drill the prince and his party were entertained by Col. Sumaer at his residence. A drive was taken through Arlington cemetery and stops made at the graves of some of the more famous herces buried there. Tonight Prince Albert wil! be the guest of Count Eichtervelde at Rauscher's, and the guests at this dinner will comprise the leading diplomatic representatives of for- eign nations at the nationa! capital and U.S. Dental Ass’n, COR. ifH AND D 8TS. Prince Albert has expressed great ad- miration for the city of Washington and its public buildings, and has been par- ticularly impressed with the wide’ streets and avenues. Another thing that has grati- fied him has been the freedom from annoy- ance that he has enjoyed while here. He has come and gone as he pleased at the Arlington Hotel, without being followed by curious groups, as was the case in New York, and is of the opinion that Washing- ton is in a striking degree cosmopolitan in its character. ——_~+2-—____ SPAIN’S POSITION DEFINED. Senor Moret’s Significant Address at a Banguet in Madrid. A special cable to the New York Herald from Madrid says: Senor Moret’s eloquently simple speech at the last banquet on the occasion of the Grand Cross of Carlos III being conferred on the governor of this province may be taken as the reply of the government to the American outbursts and an exposition of the attitude of Spain in the whole matter. Among the most pregnant expressions were these: “Wheat is the great difficulty against which we fight? Civil war and insurrection in Cuba, to which there are several corol- laries. The most prominent are the forces at work to sustain it. We, I affirm, are en- tirely confident that we can terminate the insurrection, and that we are nearing a so- lution of the problem. “It has been said that autonomy is a failure. This is felse and mendacious. The policy of the liberal government is giving grand and evident results. As a proof of it, Cuba is being converted from a devas- tated into a productive country. Production is being augmented, cultivation is extend- ing, property is increasing in value, and prosperity is returning. “Contrary to the statements of those who have an interest in perverting the truth, in the oriental provinces our gallant troops are chasing the rebels at the bayonet’s point with cries of ‘Viva Espana!’ and mor- al order has been restored since the birth of the constitution, which is supported by old_irreconcilables. “With peace in Cuba will come the tri- umph over all doubts, and it lies in the hands of the. Spanish people on the one side, with the soldiers on the other. By patriotism I xnow the fatherland will not lose an inch of territory, for I believe that success will crown my efforts, and should there arise a supreme moment, we will call upon the sons of Spain that they may rally in the road of duty and show all foreigners <= THERE IS A CLASS OF PEOPLE are injured ‘the use of coffee.
