Senator Wolcott championed tho bill and after come persistent work secured $2 ayes to 12 nays. Opposition came from Senator Cockrell, who thought the revenues of the District were not equal to such appropriations; from Senatar Voorheos, who thought the locality unfit; from Senators Haw- Jey and Vest, who want the public parks to be kept sacred, and from Senator Faulkner, who thought the entire proposition was wroug. ‘TRE BRLT LINE RAILROAD. Suse THE CASE OF MR. YOUNG. The Press Committee’s Investigation De- clares the Charges Against Him Unfounded. So far as thecorps of Washington corre- spondents can do it Mr. James Ik, Young hes been acquitted of the flimsy charges upon which the Senate dismissed him from his posi- tion as principal executive ¢lerk. Some time ago the press committee was requested to make an investigation and to report to the cor- respondents whether in the opinion of the com- mittee the action of the Senate was based upon evidence and whether Mr. Young’s removal from office carried with it any imputation as to his character or general fitness to aesociate with gentlemen. Today the commit- tee made public its report and in it states “in prosecuting the inquiry as to whether the com- mittee hes jurisdiction in this case we were led to make informal inqniry concerning the publisbed allegation that Mr. Young communicated to newspaper correspondents information about transactions in the Senate while in executive session. Every correspond- ent with whom we conferred unequivocally denied that such information had been re- ceived from Mr. Young, and this is the unan- imous opinion and declaration of the cor- respondents. We have no hesitation, therefore, in declaring ‘that in our judgment there was no foundation for such charges against Mr. Young as are alluded to in the paper requesting an investigation by this committee.” —_—_—+«--_-__ DULLNESS AT THE CAPITOL. , More Interest Apparently in Coming Con- ventions Than in Present Legislation. Everything bears a rather dull look today at the Capitol. The emigzation last night of most of the newspaper men left the press gallery in @ depopulated condition, while the members of'| the House who can spare time from arranging the program for the national convention long enough to get up to the House spend their time in wandering aimlessly around with a general appearance of attempting to be in two places at once. There is little political gossip of importance. A story has circulated that Mr. Blaine recently stated definitely that he would not be the nominee at Minneapolis. ‘The story is met, however, by the explanation that the conversation, which ‘was with @ well known semi-newspaper official of the State Department, happened several wecks ago, and that the questions and answers, upon which the published statement rests, were entirely jocular and made in such an off-hand ‘Way as to be unimportat MAY SUCCEED DR.
