The Nationals’ work showed a vast improvement over that in the opening game with the Bos- tons. ‘The hitting was better, the judging of balis was better. The visitors showed them- selves far superior in base running. They watched every point and took advantage of every misplay. Yet, well as tho visitors played, they managed to only barely beat out the locals in the ninth in the second game. ‘The less said about the first the bettor. Not ton played badly, but the dis- | parity in the number of runs made by each side wae so great. Boston batted Gastright's delivery opportunely and the locals made mis- # opportanely for the visitors. In conse quence the men from Beacon Hill scored 8 and earned only 2 of them. Hoy, Capt. Dan aud Mulligan made singles, but the others couldn't bit erafty War-horse Clarkson, and as a result no runs were scored. Every one. however, expected Boston to w one of the games, and so the 3,500 persons who saw the first game settled back in their seats contentediy and waited for Gaffney to open the secoud, hoping that the prize would be found, By 4:30 the crowd had grown to 6,000. Bleach ers. grand stand and third-baso seats were filled and hundreds roosted on fences, house- tops, telegraph poles and the ground. It would be « goud idea to build accommodations for a thousand more on the bleachers. Dowd reached first on balls in the second and scored Washington's only run on Ganzel's high throw over second. Strangely enough Koston's tying run was made in the same way. Tucker was hit by the ball and scored on Me- Guire’s wild throw to catch Stivetts at second, The winning run was made in the ninth by Long, who had taken first by forcing Stivetts at second and had gone to third on Danny Lichardson’s attempt to make a doublo play by heading him off at first. The ball went wide and Larkin, being somewhat disabled, could aot stop it. MR. BONAPARTE’S ADDRESS. Mr. Bonaparte, who followed the cardinal, made an addrcss on “The Ends and Scope of University,” which was received with every mark of approbation by his hearers, “This is not,” he said in the course of his address, “merely a umiversity—it is a Catholic Un versity. LAYING THE CORNER STOXE. After the addresses the cardinal, the arch- ishops the bishops and clergy withdrew to other rooms, aud, donuing their vestments, formed a procession which. preceded by the students of the Paulist College. who chanted Psalms as they went slong, marched to the building. As customary in such processions the cardinal and his atvend- ants. Rev. Dr. Thomas 0. Gorman and Kev.Dr. ‘Thomas Shahan, came last. The cardinal was arrayed in miter and colder vestments and bore aloft s golden shepherd's crook. At the corner where the stone was laid the prelates gathered and a brief ritual was carried out, the students chanting at interval. The cardinal blessed the stone and placed upon it a trowel fall of mortar, smoothing it over, as the stone Was moved into piace. As stated in yesterday's Stax, the third day’ racing of the spring mecting of the Washing- ton Jockey Club drew the largest attendance of the meeting, about 3,000 persons being Present. It was an ideal racing day, and but for the tedious delay in starting the horses in the second race the day would have been one of uninterrupted pleasure. ‘Twelve sciling platers Went to the post in that race, the average price of the lot being but £533, and for one hour and five minutes the people impatiently watehed the struggle of the starter to effect a good.
