THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. ‘THURSDAY - April 28, 1982. CROSBY 8. NOYES. ++. Editor. THE EVENING STAR hasa regular and permanent circulation in Washington three times larger than that of any other Paper in the city. As a local NEWS paper and Advertising Medium it bas no competitor. The expression of the Coloralo convention Of silver leagues against any presidential can- didate not in sympathy with the free coinage movement is only one of a number of signs of unrest heretofore alluded to. The popular feeling throughout the silver states {is one of the political phenomena of the time to be studied carefully by the leaders of the two parties. It is becoming more manifestly trac every day that both parties have something to fear from popular discontents, To the demo- erate two fields of discontent are plainly in wiew—the state of New York and the south. ‘To the republicans the trouble is mainly west- ern, and relates to the silver question. Never- theless there 1s sporadic disquiet in other local- ities affecting both of the old partics. Be- tweon this time and the time of holding the party conventions many things may occur either to increase the lack of harmony or to fompote the internal troubles of one or both of the old organizations, Just at present the Furface drift of the democrats toward the gomination of Mr. Cleveland gives an access of geal to the silver people. What will be the gitzation in that party by the 2ist of June, the diate of their national convention, no man can foretell. What the republicans will do has een supposed an easier prophetic task. It qnay not be so if the silver states maintain an attitude of opposition to the gencral party ill, The republican convention meeting first, et on the 7th of June, has the harder task, fo far aa the sil concerned. he democratic convention has, however. @ monstainons temptation assailing it in the event the prior convention should be forced by the stress to weaken itself in the the temptation to risk tho east and its more btfal list to grasp rant eilver ri n stal in the face of a formidable t in the two parties on the z e conventions will be able + that will satisfy the con 1 ‘The present outlook positively j 1 for the platform builders. — —2-e—__ ‘Tux Stan is the better able, by reason of its recent experien to sympathize with the Pailadelphia Times in the severe Icsses sus- ned by it im last night's fire.
