Although the city bas both gaslight works and an giectrie light plant the | former light te only used for. private consum Ne use was made of pee eae of the contract for the ip on lights, which allowed incandescent as well as are lights, so that the city bas arc lights alone. The town clock and city buildi as all the private houses, are lighte: with gas from works established in 1388 but Jargely improved since that time. For many years improved coal gas has been supplied at $1.60 per thoBsand fet, with o dedueton of 10 per cent,so that $1.44 per thousand feet is the price now paid for Alexandria gas. ‘THE APRIL LIQUOR LICENSES. The commissioners of excise board are now bolding daily meetings at Paff's building on King street. It is a company of three and con- sists of two officers and one private, and is em- to recommend persons to the corpor- Toon for license to sell liquor or to re- fuse s recommendation to such person. No tion can be presented to ‘the court without the indorsement of the ex- cise board. The applications for license are now being considered by the board and next ‘week such applicants as they may indorse will apply to the corporation court for license and Tehge Norton wil grant or refuse license as ap- pears proper. THE TRADE IX SHAD AND HERRING. Alexandria was once the depot of the fish ‘trade in this section of the country, but the fish business has for years been transferred to the foot of 11th street, Washington, and that has now become the center of the fish trade of this section. Lately Alexandria bas gotten back # considerable portion of the trade in her- , but the shad commerce is now almost exclusively a Washington business. it is hoped that the railroad facilities of this city will soon enable Alexandria to renew its former pre-emi- nence in this respect. HOW COUNTY LAND SELLS. The recent Alexandria county land sales show that there has been no decline in the ‘Price of real estate there. Forty-eight acres near Falls Church have been sold for £4,000, ‘three acres near Carne school house for $320, 1334 acres near Balston for £1.500 and four acres near Carlin’s Springs for £2,000. The funerals of H. C. Hancock and Gilson Berryman, two well-kuown citizens, took place yesterday afternoon. The Columbia and the Hydraulian fire com- ‘Panies have held their monthly meetings this week, devoted to the election of new members and routine business N." Free, well known as an itinerant who used to “tift the veil” and take eqllections at the street corners, is here again. A few shad have recently been caught in the river opposite this city and many herring in Hunting creek. Mrs. Mary G. Cornwell, keeper of city alms house, bas withdrawn her resignation and will continue in the place, much to the satisfaction of Mayor Strauss and the city authorities. The District government is running a pipe from the high service reservoir in such a man- ner that it will connect withthe main on Road street near 32d, which supplies Burleith. The pressure in this section has been almost de- stroyed by the diverting of the water to Wash- ington. It is said by an old citizen that when the reservoir was constructed by Gen. Meigs it ‘was intended that only Georgetown shouid be supplied from it, and while such was the case no trouble in getting a volume of water was ex- perienced. FELL OVERBOARD, BUT WAS RESCUED. Yesterday afternoon a small colored boy who, ‘with @ companion, was out in boat near Wheatley’s wharf became careless in moving about and fell overboard. He was promptly Yescued, rowed to the shore and escorted to his home at the lower end of Beall street. THE ¥. M. C. A. GROUNDS. The grounds of the Y. M-C.
