KUS APPEARS. 11EUT. BAC REPURLICANS CARRY RHODE ISLAND. ‘They Have » Pluratity of 2047 and = Ma- Jority of 186, Provivexce, RB. L, April 7.—Complete re turns from all parts of the state show « total vote on state ticket of 54,746, an increase of about 10,000 over the largest ever polled be fore, The two partion raked every city and town almost bare of voters, and got out an unexpectedly and unprecedentediy full vote, both in actual numbers and in to the possible vote. ‘The finished returns show a great republican victory. On the state ticket Brown, republican candidate for governor, 27,466; Wardwell, democrat, 25.41% Gilbert, prohibitionist, 1,590, Burton,” people’ candidate, 1%, and 75 scattering. These fig: ures show a plurality of 2,047 for Brown and « majority of 186. Bull and Utter, repub- lican candidates for lieutenant governor and secretary of state, are also elected by small majorities, but there is no election for attorney general and treasurer. The cities of Providence, Newport and Woonsocket went democratic on the state ticket, REPUBLICAN MAJORITY IN THE LEGISLATURE. ‘The legislature returns show a good repub- licau majority in both branches already, with between 15 and 20 vacancies yet to be filled. In’ the senate the republicans have thus far elected 20 out of 36 members, and in the eee Got of members. Thie gives them 61 on joint ballot, « majority of six, besides the vacancies yet to be filled by second elections. Most of these failures to elect are in Providence and Newport.+ In the former city only three of thirteen mem- bers of the legislature were chosen and in Newport only one of six. The other failures were scattered among the «mall towns. The control of the legislature by the republicans gives them the choice of three candidates for attorney general and treasurer and secures be- yond # doubt the re-election of Nelson W. Ald- Tich tothe United States Senate, Mayor Carroll was defeated for ta tive in Pawtucket and Mayor Honey failed of an election for a similar position in Newport, but has another chance on the second election on Tuesday, there being no election by any candidate for the position. The repul a feeling very jubilant, as they secured “everything ' to be desired, or the assurance of everything—the legislature, all their state officers and a United States Senator, while the democrats are crest- fallen, having nothing to hope for trom the second elections except local influence and in- dorsement, as the postponed trials cannot effect the result in auy important respect. XO DOUBT OF BROWN'S ELECTION. New You, April 7.—The Mail and Express (republican) bas the following from Provi- dence, R.L: “At 9 o'clock this morning the re- turns are yet incomplete and need verification in several districts to correct manifest in accu- racies, but Brown is elected governor by from 200 to 600 majority, and Lieutenant Governor Bull and Secretary of State Utter by slightly ler figures, with handsome pluralities for ‘torney General Burbank and Treasurer Clark. ‘Lhe assembly is certain to have a republican majority of from ten to twenty-five at the least. At is doubtful if all the returns will be in and verified before tomorrow, but it is likely that by 1 o'clock "more definite figures can be given than now. The total vote will exceed 50,000, and may reach 55,000--the largest on record, At this hour there have been heard from, on the ticket, twenty-nine towns, which give in the senate nineteen republicans and six democrate, with uo electicn in four towns and seven yet to be heard from. In the house there are, as far as heard from, twenty-four republicans and sixteen democrats, with no election in fifteen towns and seventeen: districts yet to be beard from. The result really surpasses the most hopeful expectations of the republicans themselves, and the ui edly good fortune secms to have resulted the terrible slump made by the democrats im suck loc§lities as the Blackstone valley, where such a thing asa sweeping republican victory was wholly unlosked for.” recon OBSERVING FAST DAY.
