Bringing the Dead From the Ander- Tues Mine, GOVERNOR THAYER WILL FIGHT AGAIN Eighty Thousand Miners in Dur ham Begin a Strik THE CEREMONIES OF OCT. 18, AN HORROR Nearly 250 Lives Lost in the Anderlues Mining Disaster. Bauvesers, March 12.—The Anderives calam- ity increases in horror. The pit is now bura- ing, and smoke and flames bar the searchers im It is feared now that not less than 240 miners have perished, inclad- ing @ large number of women, of whom there were many employed in the mine. The most touching scene at the pit mouth teday was the spectacle of children we mothers who had been lost in the fands continue toflock to Anderiue posed to turn water into the mine for the pur- pose of putting a stop to the conflagration. King Leopold is informed hourly of the situation at Anderlues. It ie now believed that all those not rescued yesterday were killed at the time of += the ex- plosion or died soon after. Never theless the friends and relatives persist im hoping that some may have escaped by taking retuge insome working protected from the effect of the explosion. Nobody shares this belief, however, except the families of the men nd men who are in the pit. There is uo doubt that those who were not destroyed by the explosion were suffocated by the fumes or drowned in the water which in- yaded various portions of the mine. The authorities are providing for that are left with- ther. It is said that e bus- don of one LouseLold areamong (here are several of the same family. een ieee THAYER WILL CONTEST aGarx, He Will Not Give Up the Office of Governes to Boyd. THE BERING SEA CASE Senator Sherman Bricfly Gives His Views Upon the Situation. Up to this time Senator Sherman has declined to express his views relative to the Bering sea controversy in view of the fact that his posi- tion a8 chairman of the Senate committee on foreign relations would have caused such an expression to savor of impropriety while the subject was under the seal of secrecy and be- fore the Senate in earccutive session. Now, however, as the Senate has made public all of the correspondence and the text of the arbitration treat ator Sherman feels at liberty to speak publicly of the matter. When he was asked today whether be favored the rat- itication of the treaty in view of the failure up to this time to secure a renewal of the modus vivendi, the Senator replied: Ido not wish to commit mrself in respect to our seal fisheries in the Pribyloff Islands uutil Lord Sal- isbury replies to the recent letter of Mr. Whar- ton. I regard the treaty now pending with the highest favor. It is honorable to both nations. It is an example of arbitration which ought to beadopted in every controversy between two countries bound by so many ties as Great Britain and the United States. A WAR WOULD BE A CRIME. A war, or even @ contention between them for a cause s0 trivial as one year's fishing for seals, would be a crime against civilization. It is manifest that it is the interest and desire of each to preserve the Alaskan seal fisheries from destruction by Canadian poachers on the high seas. The cupidity of a few vessel owners pending arbitration threatens to disturb the peace and amity of the two great nations. Surely diplomacy ought to be able to pro- vide some modus vivendi during the present season. It may be unpleasant and ungracions for Great Britain to resist by her slips and sailors the reckless acts of a few of her sub- jects, for whose conduct Lord Salisbury disclaims all responsibility, but we are under no such restraint, and are able to prevent such poaching on rights that we purchased of Rus- siaand which Russia aud the United States have openly asserted and enjoyed for one bun- dred years. ‘THE CLAIM TO BE ARBITRATED. It is now claimed that by the law of nations our title is not good; that seals born and bred on our soil may be slaughtered in the high seas when by the laws of nature they are their annual pilgrimage. We are willing, for the sake of peace, to submit this question to arbitration. We ouly ask that, the ovals may not be de- stroyed by pelagic fishing wl arbitrators are sitting.” We would "edly share with Great Britain the expense and trouble of maint tatus quo pending the arbitration, and will faithfully and honorably abide by ‘its result, but it is asking too m for us at the same time to allow irrespon- sible and unfriendly neighbors to destroy very subject matter of the contro especially when we have at our command miaus to prevent it.
