CITY AND DISTRICT. Tux Evestxo Stam. Onward in its extending nfluence, upward in its circulation and adver- tising business. The increase is a steady, healthfal one. A NEW CHURCH MOVEMENT. of the People’s Church at the Academy of Music Yesterday. ‘Meetin; A LANCE ATTENDANCE AND SOXE GOOD xUSIC— REV. MK. KENT'S ADDRESS SETTING FORTH THE PRINCIPLES OF THE NEW ORGANIZATION AND ‘THE REASONS FOR ITB EXISTENCE. A congregation that in point of numbers and quality would have done credit to almost any church gathered at the Academy of Music yes- terday morning at 11 to participate in the start- ing of a new church. which it was stated would be known as the People’s charch and would be as free from sectarianism as such an institution could possibly be. It is in itself a protest against the existing order of things and is eup- posed to have room within it for all who desire ‘8 better social system and # moral upbuilding of the people regardless of creed. A half bun- dred or more adherents of the new movement, under the leadership of Rev. Alexander Kent, formerly pastor of the Universalist Church, have been bolding preliminary meetings for | several weeks past, and as it was seen that No hands are hurt when you wash with Pearline; no harm happens to the finest fabric. The hands that are delicate have much less work ; the things that are tender have much less wear. It takes away the dirt, and brings ease in doing it. Pear? ze for washing leaves nothing to wish for; /earline in wash- 7 + , enough interest was bei taken to insure a ing leave nothing to be don yenscndible eases a publie meeting was called Beware of iipitatione 9 TAMES PYLE, for yesterday morning. ‘The congregation that | gathered was even larger than had been hoped for and was sufficient to fill the lower floor of the theater. In the seats were placed slips on which were printed three hymus by Lougfel- low, Whittier and Inaac Watts. In addition | there were cards to be filled out promising ad- cand a weekly contribution to the new h. we were apparently signed very | freety ard placed in the contribution baskets ‘that were passed around by the ushers after the sermo: On the stage was a reading desk banked in with potted plants and bebind it were seated Mev. Mr. Kent. Dr. W. Kimball, formerly pas- tor of the Unitarien Church, and Prof. Strat- ton, who led the singing. An orchestra of twelve young people under the leadership of Prof, H.C. Bernaya rendered some delightful inusic that was considerably above that usually heard on Sanday. ‘They gave the adagios from Hayden's quartet, Nos. 1 and 2, with excellent effect. POOR FOOLISH ‘REV. MR. KENT'S ADDRESS. The address or sermon of the new pastor was Perhaps the most interesting feature of the services, inasmuch asin it he laid down the prin- ciples that are to guide the newly formed et of worshippers. He began without a text and with the simple remark that it was bis pur- pose to discuss the People’s church and its reasons for being. Some people taking ex- ception to the word church might ask why they had not called it a society, association or club. None of these, he said, conveyed a proper idea of the scope or purpose of the movement and those who object to the word church might find reasons for objecting to the other words used to qualify it and church was used in preference because of its connection with all that is best and most permanent in religion. No denomination has been able to monopolize it. It is true that the great currents | of religious feeling have taken up a vast amount of foreign material that has become con- founded with the church and for which some people would hold it responsible. But it is no more a part of the church than the mudand drift of the real Potomac are a part of the ideal river. We should not discard the word church because of the errors aud wrongs committed in her name. ‘The Christ movement was in the beginning a } Movement to reform and transform the life of | all mankind, and the movement that He inau- | gurated was not in the interest of any class or nation, but for all mankind. The name taken for the organization was the most general one known to the people of that time, the ecclesia or gathering of the whole people. WHY ITS PRESENT NAME. Mr. Kent sid this was called the People’s church because it started in the interest of the people and is intended tobe a medium through which the people might in areverent way voice their ideas of justice aud thoughts of right. ‘The utilities are not contined to the animal, but minister to the good of man as well. Ail things are ours, but ours to_be used in building up a noble manhood. . ‘The unmanly man makes them the instrament of his own degradation, aad the special fonction of the church may be | clearly seen at this point. Hitherto it has laid too little stress upon the virtues of maniiness and womanliness and toomuch upon particular dogmas. ‘The character of the churchman has lacked even more than that of the worldling those genial and generous traits that form a bond of union beyond man and man. The most important things are those that have been neglected, and it is the purpose of the People’s church to call attention to these, the most im- portant features of the Christian character. Christianity is not concerned with saving a few out of the many. ‘The individual may not work out his own destiny regardless of the fate of the rest. Individuality is the best develop- ment of the one member to fit him for the best good of the whole body. ‘The poor formed the greater part of the followers of Christ, but since then the church has alienated the poor. The rich have taken possession and it has be- come identificd with praying and fasting and not with manhood and Lrotheriood. ‘This is oue reason for the existence of the People's ebureh. MORE MANHOOD WANTED IX BUSINESS. “Tobe moreexplicit,” hesaid,‘*we want more manhood in our business life. Manliness in our business relations is the chief requirement of Christian ethics. One might say that the most important are love for God and love for man. True and all important are these, but these truths have been #0 followed that neither the one or the other has-been much benefited thereby. We must have a more sturdy inde- pendence on the part of the individual. A | mun should earn his own living, and not simply get it. This makes the chief distinction be- tween the public benefactor and the thief. The state has recognized this by suppressing c tain forms of lotteries, b he business of ulating in the necessaries of life is just as bad. ‘The speaker would not reflect upon the wen engaged in the business. ‘They are as hover- ablo as many mez cute a legal busi news by illegitimatetmcans. The recent failure of a New York stock broker who was attempt ing to make a corner in one of the cereals called forth many expressions of «ympathy for the man, and yet if he had sneceeded in his ef- forts it would have brought the greatest euf- fering npon the masses. When we have manli- ness in Dusiness relations we will have none of this and men will not be willing to live upon the earnings of others. Manliness would never patronize nor kecp a saloon or gawbling house. MANLINESS IN POLITICS “We want manliness in polities. If our gav- ernment is no longer for the people it is be- cause it is no longer of and by the people. We want manliness im religion,-using that word in the narrow sense. Mauusas, fruit dealer, hip injured: Edward Maher, both kneecaps injared; Richard Powers, ten years old, hurt about the legs; John Nor- tou, twelve years old, slightly hurt. THE EXPLOSION. Three of the dead belonged to the crow of the boat, while the others were bystanders who were killed by flying debris. The Parker, to- gether with the tugs Van Schack, Perry and Shields, had been working all day endewvoring to free the > propeller H. 8. Pickands, which had grounded in the eouth draw of the bridge. ‘They had puffed and puiled away almost inces- sandy tii shortly before 5 o'clock, when, ‘with comparatively little noise, the boiler of the Parker ex; ploded. Columus of water were thrown into the air, falling upon the other tugs, drenching and blinding the crews. A momen’ later the debris showered upon the ground on either side of the ri Pieces of broken iron and wood fell upon the docks and the streets. At the time Archer avenue, near the scene of the accident, was crowded. @ noise of the explosion and the falling wreck caused a terrible panic. When the spectators partially recovered their senses it wus discovered that eight persons were dead, while many more were injured, some of them probably fatally. A SAD ACEXE. When the fecling of fright caused by the catastrophe bad passed away the spectators crowded around the spot where lay the body of Mrs. Lice, her little daughter and the unknown man. Mrs, Rice lay on her side, hor face crushed and bruised, while blood poured from her mouth, nose and ears. By her side lay her little daughter. The fate of the two was peculiarly sud. Before the explosion Mrs. Rice had been standing on the south side o! Archer avenue holding the babe in her arms, and iu endeavoring toescape when the crash came her skull was crushed by a piece of iron. At the same moment her little daughter was struck on the head bya piece of the furnace door. On the other shore Bartholomew Curtin and Richard Powers, boys aged ten aud twelve, were standing watching the tuga. Curtin was struck on the head by «n_ iron bolt and fell to the ground. His skull had been cut open and the brains were oozing out when he was picked u Young Powers was also struck by the fly- ing missiles and injured. As the wir cleared after the explosior. the Parker was seen rolling slowly and settli stern foremost, inte the water. A moment later Joseph Cullen and Henry Bell were seen struggling in the water. Life lines were thrown to them, and they were heiped on board oue of the other tugs. Cullen's flesh was almost par- boiled, and in clinging to the life ropes the skin was torn from his hands. THE Cavs! ‘The explosion was a peculiar one. The fe- talities on shére in each case occurred some distayce from the wrecked tug and in places where the victims would seem to be in almost perfect safety. ‘The almost unanimous opinion of the vessel- men was that the explosion was. caused by the tilthy water in the river. It in so fuil of grease and dirt and offal of every sort tat wheu it gets into a boiler it foanis up just like soap suds, which makes it very dangerous.
