A LADY BADLY BURNED. On last Saturday Miss Lousin Heupel of 3326 Prospect avenue was the victim of « very pain- ful accident. She was lighting one of those large-ovened gasoline stoves, when the flame suddenly darted buckward and ignited the can which folds the oil, causing the flames to aaount almost to the ceiling. She screamed for accitnace, bat no one was ness, and bravely with her naked hands the flaming can i hit Gavel a-wiahew aul: tote We street. A good deal of the burning fluid ran down her armand burned her terribly. The flesh as far as the elbow was literally roasted and turned a dark brown color. DISORDERLY IN 4 CAR Officer D. J. Coleman yesterday arrested a colored woman named Bettie Sane for miscon- ducting herself on one of the Tenleytown elec- tric cars. The car was crowded when she got on, and though there was not an inch of room on the seat she attempted to wedge herself be- tween Mr. W.S. Brown and another passenger. When Mr. Brown remonstrated she became abusive, and it is charged she struck him. In the Police Court this morning the woman denied the charge and her testimony was cor- roborated by another witness. Judge Miller diamissed the case. THE CATSUP WAS SPOILED. Georgetown has a Mr. Bowser and he is & prominent merchant on $2dstreet. From his earliest childhood, itis said, he has been pas- sionately fond of catsup, but never has he tasted any that quite came up to his idea of what catsup would taste like if it was properly made, sohe revolved to make some afte? his own his resolution, she put her foot coldly down on it and refused bim the use of his own stove. ‘This did not cool his determination though, for he remembered there wus in a rear room of his place of business a stove that would suit his purpose exactly, and, under the cover darkness, ‘he smuggled @ preserving kettle from ‘bis kitchen and Yesterday morning’s sun saw it seated comfort- ‘ably over a hot fire. The tomatoes were pur- chased from a néighboring producedealer, and by 11 o'clock were slowly ussuming the ap- pearance of catsup. By 12he thought it was ut in the various seasonings and just jore be started for lunch the contents of aes mysterious packages that were lying near was dumped in the kettle, Hardly be gone when the odor of tomatoes became dis- tinet and ® strange, um nt, unrose-like odor pervaded the entire neighborhood. In- stantly the clerks who were in the front room be- gan toinvestigate. The nearerthey approached that catsup the more perceptible became the smell, and after three probable customers had entered the store, sniffed the air and de- camped, there was fished from the kettle’s depths a good-sized piece of asafetida. Pretty oon the merchant came back from dinner pucking his lips at the thought of the treat yet to come, bat he, too, haited ut the door and sniffed. When the matter was explained to him be vowed vengeance on a friend whom he said had voluntarily assisted him, and changed bis package of spices for one containing asafa- tida. Of coarse the whole kettle of catsup was ruined, but the merchant still bas faith in his recipe. Notes.
